Asian Studies Professor Christopher Rea's translation of "The Unfinished Comedy" (Lü Ban, dir., 1957) was published by the UBC Chinese Film classics Project on April Fool's Day 2025. This daring meta-cinematic satire of the early Mao era takes direct aim at the myopia of present-day New China’s cultural gatekeepers, featuring a showdown between filmmakers and the censor, "Comrade Bludgeon." When the two most popular screen comedians from before the Communist Revolution resume making films in New China, will the results be "flowers of comedy" or just "weeds"? Dr. Rea's translation of the film is available on the CFC website or YouTube! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gBCDXAmj
