The Dorothy Killam Fellowships support scholars who:

  • demonstrate commitment to building Canada’s future and alignment with Killam attributes (inclusive collaborator, barrier breaker, researcher leader)
  • are mid-career researchers (typically have completed their PhD no more than 15 years prior)
  • are employed at a Canadian research institution

The Dorothy Killam Fellowships are valued at $80,000 CAD per year for a total of up to $160,000 for 2 years.

A Dorothy Killam Fellow is relieved of teaching and administrative duties for the period of the fellowship. The funds are intended to assist the institution to cover the costs of replacement of the applicant while still paying regular salary and benefits during the 2-year fellowship period. Recipients must obtain support for research and laboratory costs from other sources. All fellowship dispersals are administered to the existing research institution of the applicant.

The Office of Research Prizes and Awards will provide reviews of application materials for this competition. We encourage candidates to submit draft materials early as ORPA is unable to guarantee detailed feedback on materials received after June 6.

Note that institutional sign off is required for this award. For each application, Department Heads must email stephanie.oneill@ubc.ca before June 10, 2024 to confirm:

  1. Employment of the candidate for up to 2 years from the start of the fellowship.
  2. Support of the candidate’s release from teaching and administrative duties for the duration of the fellowship.
  3. If the candidate wins a fellowship, the Department/Unit Head or authorized signatory will sign off on the Research Project Information Form (RPIF) and the conditions it entails.

Candidates must submit their final applications directly to the sponsor using the National Killam Program portal by 23:59 (applicant’s local time) on June 13, 2024. Please consult the National Killam Program guidance documents for more details on the submission process.
