Title: Whose Ethics Inform That Code? End-User Perspectives on Embodied Health Technology

Abstract: In this presentation, Dr. Robillard will provide an overview of embodied technologies such as social robots, from research prototypes to devices on the market, and will review their brain health-related applications for children, adults and older adults. She will showcase the latest evidence around the impact of social robot use in the context of brain health and illness, and discuss key ethical implications surrounding their use. Dr. Robillard will review some of the main challenges in social robot research, and will share insights about the development of devices that are aligned with end-user ethics and emotions.

Bio: Dr. Julie Robillard is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of British Columbia and Scientist in Patient Experience at BC Children's & Women's Hospitals. She leads the Neuroscience, Engagement and Smart Tech (NEST) lab within Neuroethics Canada, where her research program evaluates the benefits and harms of current and emerging technologies that support brain health across the lifespan, and develops novel, emotionally-aligned tools to assist people with brain health conditions in living their best life.
