About us

We are leveraging the collective power of clinical care, lifestyle programs, education, and research to design a comprehensive and integrated approach to brain wellness for people with chronic brain conditions, care partners and healthy agers. The BC Brain Wellness Program is a unique and interactive program establishing clinically relevant lifestyle approaches to complement medical treatment in the clinics at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. By combining traditional clinical care with interventions that support healthier lifestyles, the program’s goal is to improve and sustain quality of life and function for its participants while pursuing rigorous research into lifestyle interventions for brain health. In addition, the program provides learning opportunities for medical professionals and the general public on brain wellness practices and enhanced educational experiences for UBC students from a wide range of fields. The program fosters interdisciplinary collaborations with UBC programs, including Physiotherapy, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosciences, Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Psychology and the School of Music as well as several community partners. The BC Brain Wellness Program was established in October 2019. At the arrival of the pandemic in British Columbia, the team swiftly moved the program online, turning the challenge into a major opportunity for growth. The program now offers 26 different programs, with a user base of approximately 1,000 individuals. Since April 2020, 750 hours of free programming have been delivered. At a time of physical and social isolation, the BC Brain Wellness Program has been providing a community of wellbeing, a “lifeline” for many of our participants. With your support, the program has the potential to reach and benefit people from all across British Columbia and beyond.

  • The HealtheSteps® Program was designed by physician and scientist Dr. Robert Petrella and builds on the idea of “exercise as medicine”. Dr. Petrella and his team have spent over 10 years empirically testing and improving the HealtheSteps® Program.    HealtheSteps® is currently being delivered as a free, virtual, 6-month healthy lifestyle program, providing adults (18+) with a specific plan of action to improve physical activity levels and reduce sedentary behaviour; increase exercise levels; improve eating habits; spend more time in nature; and improve mental wellbeing. Trained coaches include medical and allied health students who work one-on-one with participants to meet them where they are at, set personalized goals, and develop incremental and sustainable changes.   Patient and self-referrals to participate in the program are welcome! You can find out more or sign up at the HealtheSteps® website here: https://healthesteps.ca/
