Earlier this month, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, the Honorable Brenda Bailey, was at The University of British Columbia to celebrate a major expansion of the university’s life sciences & technology education programs. It’s only the latest example of how UBC is setting a new tempo for #BiomedicalInnovation. “There is an incredible opportunity in front of us to cement B.C.’s position in life sciences on the world stage, the benefits of which will be truly transformative for our bio-innovation economy and for the health of people across Canada and beyond,” says Dr. Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-President, Health, UBC. This week, learn how UBC researchers, learners and spin-off companies are propelling the growth of Vancouver’s life sciences sector. ➡️bit.ly/3w36Pd9

“Our primary goal is to create a bridge to #STEM and help dismantle barriers to post-secondary education for Indigenous youth in B.C.,” says #seed2STEM program co-founder Dr. Corree Laule, associate professor in the Departmentof Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC and associate director of education for ICORD.
“I realized that by pursuing a career in science, I could maybe make a difference in people’s lives too,” says Shana George, a second-year biology student at UBC Vancouver from the Squamish Nation and past participant of the seed2STEM program. #seed2STEM is an innovative program at UBC offering six-week paid summer internships for B.C. Indigenous youth in research labs at both the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses. Since its launch in 2019, the program has seen significant interest and growth, and recently received funding from the Faculty of Medicine’s Strategic Investment Fund to expand across the Faculty. Learn how the program is helping improve representation of Indigenous students in #STEM and discover what past participants, like Shana, have to say about their experience. bit.ly/4aIVFsJ
