Save the date for our annual Yip So Man Wat Lecture in Chinese Studies!
The Yip So Man Wat Memorial Lectures is an annual public lecture made possible by the generous support of Messrs. Alex and Chi Shum Watt in honour of their mother, the late Mrs. Wat, and her passion for Chinese literature and culture.
This year, the lecture will be held on March 26, 2026. Celebrate 10 years of our Cantonese Language Program as our guest speakers explore the topic of Cantonese language learning.

New report co-authored by Dr. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa
Co-authored by our Assistant Professor of Lifeways in Indigenous Asia, Pasang Yangjee Sherpa and supported by student assistant Dan Hackborn, this report provides recommendations to support respectful and non-extractive engagement with Indigenous Knowledge Systems within the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Creating stories in Japanese: 2025/2026 Japanese Language Program Writing Contest
The UBC Japanese Language Program held its fourth writing contest last November with the theme “journey/travel.” The contest was open to all students enrolled in Japanese in the 2025/26 Winter Terms, as well as in the past.
Alex Yu and Jin Go were selected as the winners of the Senior category by a panel of judges composed of Ms. Tomoko Kitayama Yen (Japanese Studies Librarian) and the faculty members of the Japanese Language Program. This time, the first-place winning piece will be shared as official reading material for the Japanese Language Program’s “Tadoku Reading Club”.

Recap: 2025/26 Capstone Lecture with Dr. Don Baker
On January 30, 2026, in honor of longtime Professor of Korean History and Religion, Dr. Don Baker, the Department of Asian Studies held its second Capstone Lecture – a series established to recognize the retirement from teaching of professors of the Department.
Marking his 40-year milestone with the UBC Asian Studies department, Dr. Don Baker discussed the lives of three brothers - a renowned philosopher, a pioneer biologist, and a Catholic Martyr in Chosŏn Korea.

Call for abstracts: LangSci's Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research Day
The Language Sciences Institute invites abstract submissions for the Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research Day, taking place on April 30th, at UBC Vancouver. Scholarly work related to language from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective is welcomed! Applicants must be graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. The submission deadline is February 26.
Registration Open: University of Maryland's Korean Summer Language Institute
Rapidly improve your Korean language skills in a 9 week intensive program with the University of Maryland’s Summer Language Institute. During the program, students are effectively immersed in a Korean-speaking environment, with approximately seven hours a day of structured language-learning experiences. Apply by March 20 to receive $200 off the cost of attendance.
Call for Applications: Videographic Venice
Co-organized by Colleen Laird and her colleagues, Videographic Venice invites participants to explore Venice as both subject and medium through videographic criticism. Participants will complete a series of specially designed videographic exercises that build a transferable methodological toolkit, applicable to future research in other cities and contexts. Applications are due March 31.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong's MA Programme provides comprehensive training in understanding Japanese society, culture, history, and language, equipping students with the skills necessary for further academic pursuits or careers related to Japan. The final round for applications ends on March 31.
