2025 Japanese Language Program Writing Contest
The UBC Japanese Language Program is holding the annual writing contest for all students enrolled in the 2025/26 Winter Terms. Students who have previously taken Japanese courses are also welcome to join the contest! The objectives of the competition are to inspire creativity through writing in a newly learned language and to provide students with opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and modes of expression.

Department of Asian Studies at the 38th Japan Studies Association of Canada Annual Meeting
Earlier this month, Asian Studies faculty, graduate students and alumni gathered at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta for the 38th Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) annual meeting.
Graduate students Sydney Olney and Saeko Suzuki won awards for best presentation by MA students and PhD students, respectively.

Eco-documentary Screening + Conversation: City of Shells: Our Forgotten Oyster Reefs and Breathing Room
Join the Sustainability Initiative Committee and the Hong Kong Studies Initiative for a double feature of City of Shells: Our Forgotten Oyster Reefs 香江遺礁 and Breathing Room 白海豚失樂園, two eco-documentaries that illuminate the often-overlooked natural heritage of Hong Kong.
Following the screenings, two environmental NGO practitioners, Marine Thomas and Viena Mak, will join for a virtual Q&A and provide insights into the ecological protection efforts of environmental NGOs in Hong Kong and across Asia.

Call for Proposals: Digital Project Exhibitions at new Array()
new Array() is a pilot pop-up exhibition space dedicated to showcasing innovative digital scholarship and digital art by UBC students, faculty, and staff. Located in Koerner Library and accessible to both the University community and the broader public, this initiative will feature a rotating series of static (images) and mobile (video) works, displayed on an 80-inch monitor in a space with comfortable seating. Proposals from all disciplines are encouraged and submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.
The JET application for the 2025-2026 Cycle is now open!
The JET Programme offers a minimum one-year opportunity to experience Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher or Coordinator for International Relations through an official Government of Japan program. Participants gain valuable overseas work experience, learn about Japanese culture, and meet participants from around the world, while contributing to language education and international understanding. The deadline to apply for the 2026 JET Programme is November 14.
Call for paper: 8th Annual HEX Conference
The History of Experience conference, “Histories of Experience in Society: Frictions, Margins, Ruptures”, will take place at Tampere University, Finland, on March 9-11, 2026. Contributions that explore how experiences relate to frictions, marginalizations, and disruptions in history of society are welcomed. Submissions end on November 30.
Call for proposals: Open Educational Resource Grants 2026/27
Grants of up to $25,000 are available for UBC Vancouver faculty who wish to address course material affordability and access, through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER), as required materials into their credit courses. The application deadline is January 15, 2026.
Book your graduation photography appointment
Students graduating in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 can now book photography appointments. The photo will be displayed on the official 2026 graduating class composite, and you are encouraged to book early as these dates are open to all graduating students; weekends and evenings sell out fast. To be included on the graduating class composite, you must be photographed by March 30, 2026.
