Commemorate Orange Shirt Day – September 30
Orange Shirt Day (OSD), September 30, is a day to honour and uphold Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, and to commemorate those who didn’t return home.
Join the Faculties of Land and Food Systems and Forestry for an Intergenerational March to commemorate OSD. The March is intergenerational, and aims to be educational and supportive to the Indigenous community on campus and beyond.

BC Japanese Language Teachers Information Exchange Meeting 2025
On August 18, 2025, the annual BC Japanese Language Teachers Information Exchange Meeting was held at the Asian Centre Auditorium, UBC. Co-hosted by the UBC Japanese Language Program and the Japan Foundation Toronto, and supported by the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE)’s Regional Workshop Support Fund, this marked the third year the event was held.

High Level Delegation From Nepal Visits UBC
Last month, a high-level delegation from Nepal visited UBC to meet with existing research partners and explore new research collaborations.
Hosted by our Assistant Professor Dr. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa, the group visited TRIUMF, Go Global, the Museum of Anthropology with our Associate Professor Dr. Fuyubi Nakamura, and Nitobe Garden with our Associate Professor Dr. Christina Laffin.

Dr. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa Speaks at the International Mountain Conference
Our Assistant Professor of Lifeways in Indigenous Asia, Pasang Yangjee Sherpa, was recently invited as a panelist for "The value of Glaciers" special event at the International Mountain Conference in Innsbruck.
Dr. Sherpa discussed her collaborative research project with her community in Khumbu and the lessons she has learned from the glaciers about collective survival on a warming planet.

The program includes a variety of health learning topics and private group physical activity sessions.

This session will discuss how accent, dialect, and other aspects of language use impact classroom experiences and opportunities. We will question myths of “correctness” that shape belonging, and offer suggestions for how we can build more inclusive, responsive learning environments.

Editor Applications for the 2025-26 UBC Journal of Historical Studies is open
The UBC Journal of Historical Studies' editors contribute to selecting articles for publication, engage in the peer-review process, and work closely with authors and co-editors throughout the publishing process. This is an opportunity for students to gain experience in academic editing by playing an active role in advancing and sharing cutting-edge historical research. The application deadline is 11:59 PM on September 26.
Call for Applications: 2026 Lind Initiative Seminar
Upper-year undergrads and graduate students are encouraged to apply to the 2026 Phil Lind Initiative 3-credit Seminar (Jan-April 2026). The 2026 Phil Lind Series theme is: America First, America Alone? Rethinking Global Leadership. Through the seminar, students will grapple with shifts in global politics and their consequences for the future of trade and security, the unraveling of multilateral cooperation, and the role of populist politics in driving foreign policy. Deadline to apply is September 30.
Call for Papers: 2025-26 UBC Journal of Historical Studies
The History Department’s student-run publication produces an annual journal that showcases the finest historical research from undergraduates, contributing to a thriving and more inclusive academic community at UBC. If you have a paper demonstrating your argumentative ability or a novel historical angle, please submit it for consideration! The submission deadline for papers is 11:59 PM on October 3.
Applications open for the StEAR Enhancement Fund
UBC faculty and staff are invited to apply for the Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism (StEAR) Enhancement Fund. Get up to $10,000 to catalyze projects that advance equity and anti-racism. The first call for faculty and staff led application closes October 15, with another application window available in January.
