Dr. Janet Um receives the 2026 Alma Mater Society (AMS) UBC Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Champion Award
Congratulations to our Sanskrit lecturer Janet Um in being selected as a recipient of the AMS UBC UDL Champion Award!
The award, which was presented at the AMS UBC Teaching and Learning Champions Reception on March 24, recognizes faculty members who aim to foster learning environments that support all students through the principles of UDL.

Dr. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa speaks on her latest report on Indigenous Knowledge Systems and climate change
On March 30, Assistant Professor Pasang Yangjee Sherpa was invited by the BC First Nations to present the co-authored report she led, "Recommendations for the Ethical and Equitable Engagements of Indigenous Knowledge Systems within the IPCC" at their Climate Gathering.
She was also interviewed by Carbon Brief on her report which advocates for the inclusion of Indigenous people in global climate science and policy processes given their holistic understanding of the climate crisis.

Entangled Territories: A Panel Discussion
The special discussion about Entangled Territories: Tibet Through Images held at the MOA on March 14, 2026 is now available on YouTube. Facilitated by Dr. Fuyubi Nakamura, Tsering Yangzom Lama and Dr. Kabir Mansingh Heimsath shared insight into Tibet and its culture as they responded to the exhibition by reflecting on their respective work as a writer and as an anthropologist.

Anushka Lahiry Wins First Place at the 20th Annual Toronto Korean Speech Contest
Congratulations to Anushka Lahiry, a third-year Psychology student and a dedicated learner in the Korean Language and Culture Program, on winning first place in the Advanced Category at the Toronto Korean Speech Contest held on March 14 at the University of Toronto. This follows her first-place win in the Intermediate Category at the same competition last year.

Cantonese Fun Night 2026: Celebrating A Decade of the Cantonese Language Program
On March 17, the Cantonese Language Program celebrated its 10th anniversary with a vibrant Cantonese Fun Night at the AMS Great Hall, drawing more than 100 attendees for an evening of music, performance, and community celebration. Students, alumni, and members of the UBC Hong Kong Yours Association gathered to honour a decade of language learning and cultural engagement.

Call for Papers – Pure Land Buddhism and the Great Earth
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhism and Contemporary Society at the University of British Columbia and the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies invite paper proposals that explore Pure Land Buddhism in relation to the “Great Earth” broadly understood. Papers may center on any geographical region, historical period, or methodological approach. Deadline for submissions is April 30.
Call for Papers – 6th International Conference on Teaching Persian Language & Literature
The 6th International Conference on Teaching Persian Language will explore how language education can remain meaningful and effective in the age of artificial intelligence, with a focus on innovative, human-centered, and community-based approaches. Participants are invited to share research, classroom-based experiences, curricular models, and assessment practices that address learners’ intellectual, cultural, and social needs. Abstracts are due by May 1.
