Janet has been with UBC for over 20 years and Safety & Risk Services for almost 10 years. From developing safe work procedures for the university to minimizing the risk of a global pandemic on campus — Janet has done it all.

  • Nationwide menstrual hygiene supplies shortage: Due to supply chain issues, we are currently experiencing delays in refilling our menstrual hygiene dispensers in washrooms across the UBC Vancouver campus. Learn more
     
  • Facilities teams work together to ensure an ideal exam experience for UBC students: Twice a year, Custodial Services and Municipal Services within Facilities work together to set up Osborne Gym and Student Recreation Centre Gym with 1,340 tables and chairs, to support and maintain an ideal exam experience for UBC students.   • UBC embraces mass timber with $180 million Gateway Building: The Gateway building design won the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 2021, with the jury commenting that the targeted GHGI goal of 1.4 was a “significant achievement. Read more about this project

  • Adaptive Planning demo: Watch Dominika Wesolowski, Senior Finance Analyst at UBCO, demo the new Adaptive Planning financial budgeting and forecasting software going live in July 2023. The demo includes a preview of the P&L Revenue & Expense model and new features. Watch now
     
  • Adaptive Planning Product Overview Webinar Recording: A recording of the product overview webinar, including the live Q&A during the session, is now available on the Adaptive Project site. Learn more
     
  • Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Training in February: There are still a few spots available at the next Yellow Belt training, held at UBC Robson Square on Feb 9 & 10. Please email David Pepin, Operational Excellence Knowledge Transfer Manager by January 10 to register.
     
  • Continuous Improvement Community of Practice (CoP) on December 1: Organized by Operational Excellence, Sean Zheng from Municipal Services within UBC Facilities, shared how advancing his knowledge of Lean Six Sigma helped advance his career, and participants had an opportunity to review the 14 principles of Lean in a UBC context.   • Grace Miguel and Isgo Nercessian – Despite extreme winter weather conditions, Isgo made it on campus to ensure UBC Employees' Payroll Cheques and Vendor Cheques were handled and delivered to the post office for mailing prior to the winter closure. Thank you for going above and beyond and delivering outstanding service excellence and accountability!

In Memoriam 

  • It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the passing of our dear friend and colleague March Cheng, HR Functional Analyst in the Integrated Service Centre. March consistently made a positive impact on every team she was a part of. Her knowledge of payroll was second to none, and she was known for her dedication and willingness to do whatever necessary to get the work completed. We will all miss her deeply.

Privacy Matters @ UBC: Data Privacy Week January 23-27, 2023

From January 23 – 26, 2023, you are invited to share why privacy matters to you by joining in the conversation about the impact technology has on our privacy rights and the importance of valuing and protecting personal information. 

  1. What’s New in Privacy? (January 23, 2023 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am) 
    • In this kickoff session, members of the Privacy and Information Security Management (PrISM) leadership team will provide an overview of new or emerging trends (and threats!) in privacy and information security.  
       
  2. Student & Employee Investigations – the Privacy Issues (January 24, 2023 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am) 
    • Paul Hancock (Legal Counsel, Information and Privacy at UBC) and Carly Stanhope, (Director of Investigations at UBC) analyze the privacy issues that arise when investigating a student or employee against accusations of misconduct.
       
  3. Web Analytics and Web Marketing – the Privacy Issues (January 25, 2023 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am)
    • David McCaughan (Associate Director of Marketing & Recruitment, Faculty of Applied Science) and Paul Hancock discuss the alarming lack of transparency from departments on how they collect and use web analytics data for marketing and other purposes.
       
  4. Ask Me Anything: Privacy Edition (January 26, 2023 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am)
    • An opportunity for the UBC community to raise their privacy-related questions to UBC’s privacy, information security, and risk management experts, as they host an open ‘Ask Me Anything’ panel session.

Lunar New Year Market at UBC Botanical Garden

UBC Botanical Garden is hosting their first Lunar New Year event in 2023 to welcome the year of the rabbit! Local makers, artists, and crafters will be selling their goods.

The festive event will also feature lion dances, kung fu performances from UBC Kung Fu Club, and dance performances from UBC Hanfu Culture Society and YunTang Dance Club. UBC Botanical Garden will also offer fresh flowers and potted plants for sale.

  • Date and Time: January 14–15, 2023 11:00am–4:00pm
  • Location: UBC Botanical Garden, Reception Centre, 6804 SW Marine Drive
  • Cost: $5 Tickets include admission to the Asian Garden (weather permitting)
