A passionate advocate for the advancement of Arabic first and second language education, Dr. Basheer spearheads our Arabic language program and is actively involved in fostering discussions and knowledge exchange between other teachers of Arabic as a second language.

Dr. Kiran K. Sunar comments on Diljit Dosanjh and the rise of Punjabi music
Our Assistant Professor of Punjabi Language, Literature, and Culture, Kiran K. Sunar, recently spoke to CBC about Punjabi Sikh singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh's hybrid and boundary-crossing career and how his rise is a testament to the Punjabi-Canadian community's labour in fighting a history of cultural racism in British Columbia.
Dr. Sunar is set to teach a new Asian Studies course in Fall 2026 titled, "Punjab Sounds" on the proliferating world of Punjabi music and culture.

Dr. Christina Laffin reflects on the impact of Japan's 'cruel heat'
As temperatures in Japan reach a breaking point, a new term has been coined for days surpassing 40˚C: kokushobi, or "cruelly hot day."
Our Associate Professor, Christina Laffin, spoke with CBC on the risks and pointed out the need especially for the elderly to take care of themselves amidst these extreme temperatures—sobering signals of climate change.

The Anthony Wong Story at UBC
On February 21, 2026, the UBC Cantonese Language Program welcomed multiple-award-winning Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong 黃秋生 to campus for The Anthony Wong Story, a special live storytelling event at the Old Auditorium as part of the language program’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
Organized by and partnering with CantoLive Culture Productions, the event brought together students, faculty, alumni, and community members for an engaging conversation on Hong Kong cinema, performance, and Cantonese popular culture.

Event recap: Harjit Kaur Sidhu Memorial Program 2026
On Friday, April 10, the Department of Asian Studies and the Asian Library hosted their 15th annual Harjit Kaur Sidhu Memorial Program, an event to recognize and celebrate excellence in the Punjabi language.
This year’s event honoured popular Punjabi poet Sardar Inderjit Singh Dhami, and awarded several UBC students for their winning entries in the annual Punjabi essay writing contest.

Event recap: On writing and translating Sakura: A conversation with Kanako Nishi and Allison Markin Powell
On Friday, April 24, acclaimed Japanese author Kanako Nishi sat down with translator Allison Markin Powell and UBC Asian Studies professor Christina Laffin for a conversation about Nishi’s recently translated novel, Sakura.
The event was also honoured by the presence of the Consul General of Japan in Vancouver, Mr. Yoshiaki Takahashi, and Cultural Officer Mr. Kazuki Yamamoto.

Call for Papers – Pure Land Buddhism and the Great Earth
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhism and Contemporary Society at the University of British Columbia and the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies invite paper proposals that explore Pure Land Buddhism in relation to the “Great Earth” broadly understood. Papers may center on any geographical region, historical period, or methodological approach. Deadline for submissions is May 15.
Call for Papers – 6th International Conference on Teaching Persian Language & Literature
The 6th International Conference on Teaching Persian Language will explore how language education can remain meaningful and effective in the age of artificial intelligence, with a focus on innovative, human-centered, and community-based approaches. Participants are invited to share research, classroom-based experiences, curricular models, and assessment practices that address learners’ intellectual, cultural, and social needs. Abstracts are due by June 1.
Call for Submissions: University of Toronto East Asian Studies Union Undergraduate Journal
The East Asian Studies Student Union at the University of Toronto is launching OnEast, an undergraduate humanities academic journal dedicated to East Asian studies. Undergraduate students with an interest in East Asian Studies (focusing on China, Korea, Japan, and adjacent countries) are invited to submit and publish their research, including but not limited to essays, translations, poetry, and photographs. Deadline for submissions is June 25.
