Helping adults re-discover their love of Cantonese language

However, she was recently interviewed by the Toronto Star about a particular class: adults whose parents spoke Cantonese to them as children but who grew up using English as their first language (due to schooling, living in Canada, or other external factors).

Q&A with Professor Sunera Thobani
Researching representations of Islam and Muslims in Cinema, Professor Sunera Thobani's new three-year SSHRC-funded study explores how cinematic representations of Muslims have shifted over the almost two decades of war in Afghanistan. With a focus on how Hollywood's representations of Muslims fuelled Islamophobia, Professor Thobani will also study films from Canada, the UK and India. Mahaparinirvana Sutra in Sanskrit/Pali/Tibetan/Chinese Reading Group
The Mahaparinirvana Sutra, chronicling the last days and death of the Buddha, is a text that exists in Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan and Chinese. We are reading the text in all four versions, in parallell, weekly on Wednesdays from 12:30 - 2:30pm, in room 506 at the Asian Library. Everyone is welcome to join! Recap: Japanese Fun Night
The annual Japanese Fun Night was held on February 28. The program's largest-ever event was standing room only, and featured student-made videos, live performances including a beatboxing demonstration and rakugo storytelling, karaoke, and a design competition. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all the student performers, MCs and TAs, and the instructors who volunteered their time to make the evening possible. See you again next year! |

The Art of the Tillana
Thursday, April 23 | 5:00 p.m. With Kavita Ramanan
Tillana is a specific form of South Indian classical music that incorporates an attractive melodic structure into a strong rhythmic framework, commonly featured in classical Indian (Bharatanatyam or Kuchipudi) dance performances. After providing a brief introduction to basic music elements such as raga and tala, Professor Ramanan will give a brief history of the evolution of the tillana and present different types of compositions, while highlighting their stylistic differences.

IGNITE Book Club
Join critically acclaimed author and activist Annahid Dashtgard, and Shirin Eshghi, Head, Asian Library, for a conversation on immigration, racism and resilience, presented by IGNITE Book Club.
IGNITE is an ongoing series of engagements with racialized authors at UBC’s Vancouver campus. Dashtgard will share insights into her works and finding joy amidst her experience of living as a racialized individual, author and academic. Following the book club program, Asian Library will be hosting musical and dance performances to celebrate the upcoming Persian New Year (Noruz), a celebration of the beginning of Spring.

Ethnologue now available to UBC Library users
UBC Library users are now able to access Ethnologue, an authoritative encyclopedic resource on world languages. The database contains datasets, analytics, maps, country profiles, language families, and language profiles of the world’s 7,111 known living languages, enabling users to find in-depth information about maps, dialects, usage, and more.

Japanese Conservation workshop
On February 11, UBC Library hosted a one-day workshop by renowned Japanese conservator Kazunori OryĆ«, who presented on Japanese scroll mounting and bookbinding in conservation. Mr. OryĆ« also met with library employees the following day to examine items from UBC Library’s own Japanese rare collections.

Critical Asian Studies Journal's Online Blog
Critical Asian Studies, a Taylor and Francis multidisciplinary academic journal, is soliciting 500-1,500-word online blog posts to for a linguistically and culturally diverse readership. With a focus on practice more than theory, the blog is now publishing posts emphasizing empirical evidence from early career scholars about emerging scholarship and research on new and critical topics infolding across Asia on the themes of research and opinion on politics, economic realities, or another critical topic in an Asian region, or reflections on fieldwork highlighting methods employed across various disciplines for research, analysis, and data collection. Deadlines for submission are on the last Friday of each month. Call for Papers: 2020 Symposium on Language Research
The UC Davis Cluster on Language Research is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Symposium on Language Research at UC Davis on May 22, 2020. The purpose of this symposium is to showcase current investigations on language, and to cultivate a community of language researchers from various institutions. All graduate and undergraduate students, lecturers, postdoctoral and visiting scholars currently investigating language in some capacity are encouraged to submit their research, preliminary or otherwise.
