Focusing our resources at the frontline

As we head into the new year, there is an opportunity to reimagine the Facilities organizational structure for emerging challenges. After further review of our budgeted resources and with our current financial constraints, I would like to ensure that our limited resources are focused at the frontline of our daily work to build, operate and maintain the campus facilities.

Our new Facilities organizational structure will enable us to work better together as an integrated Facilities team, and allow for more efficient planning, decision-making and communications. It will also reduce management costs to help address budget constraints and free resources for operational positions where workload and demands are high.  The new structure aims to break down silos and will place the emphasis on Facilities as one team, as opposed to a group of individual departments.

Kudos to our team for supporting extreme weather events and keeping our community safe

2021 certainly was an unprecedented year for those on campus working to support extreme weather events due to climate change!

From heat domes, atmospheric rivers, a tornado, and arctic outflows with little to no rest over the holiday period — our teams have had to navigate heavy snow and ice, downed trees, air quality issues, extreme heat to extreme cold temperatures, flooding and so much more!

Some interesting facts:

A big thank you goes out to all of those from across Facilities who support extreme weather such that the university can continue to operate in a safe and functional capacity.  We appreciate your dedication and commitment to the campus community.

Planon: Flagging the need for additional crews

A reminder to technicians to call their heads or the service centre when additional crews and new work orders are required for a job.

Comments and notes entered in the Planon App Suite (PMFS) do not generate notifications or transfer to other work orders yet.

Still, it is essential to use them to document work progress or any technical information that should be passed on to other crews attending the request.

When creating a Work Order per technicians' request, the Service Centre Coordinators will transfer existing notes and comments onto new subs.

EDI: Celebrating Black Excellence Day on Jan 14, 2022

Wear black on January 14th, 2022 in support of Black Excellence Day.

What is Black Excellence Day?

As a lead up to Black History Month, Black Excellence Day is a day to rejoice Black history and learn about Black stories, Black art and Black people, and a day to stand in solidarity with Black Canadians.

Black Excellence Day (formally launched as Black Shirt Day in 2021) helps profile and acknowledge black Canadians in our history and school curriculum.

The term "Black Excellence" was born out of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and Black Excellence Day falls on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, January 15th, or the Friday before if the day falls on the weekend.

Learn more on the Black Excellence Day website.

Remembering Sidney Poitier, an example of Black Excellence

Sidney Poitier, the renowned Hollywood actor, director and activist who broke through racial barriers as the first Black winner of the best actor Oscar for his role in "Lilies of the Field," and inspired a generation during the civil rights movement, has died at age 94.

Weekly Emergency Tip: Footwear by your bed

Did you know that one of the most common injuries that emergency departments had to deal with during the 6.7 Northridge earthquake that hit Southern California in the early morning hours of January 17, 1994, was removing broken glass from people’s feet?

This week's tip is about making sure you keep a pair of shoes by your bed at all times in case of a nighttime earthquake.
