Asian Independent Cinema Showcase

Vincent Chui's Leaving in Sorrow 憂憂愁愁的走了 (2001) is the first Hong Kong production filmed in the "Dogme 95" style and will be featured as the closing film for the 2023/2024 Asian Independent Cinema Showcase. The film portrays Hong Kong in the year of 1997 and how the characters find their lives suddenly turned upside down by events beyond their control. We invite you to revisit this representative work of Hong Kong indie cinema which demonstrates the pursuit of timeless vision and creativity through independent filmmaking.
English subtitles are provided, and the post-screening conversation with Director Vincent Tsui 崔允信 will be conducted in English.

March 22: Co-presented by South Taiwan Film Festival (STFF) and UBC Asian Independent Cinema Showcase, "In Search of Home: Short Films Selection and Conversation with Filmmakers" featured three award-winning short films from Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The audience participated enthusiastically in the post-screening conversation with the three filmmakers and the artistic director of STFF (photos).

March 23: Organized by the Vancouver Hong Kong Forum Society and co-sponsored by the SFU Institute For Transpacific Cultural Research as well as the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative, this informative conversation on the state and resilience of the press in Hong Kong with Prof. Francis Lee (School of Journalism and Communication, Chinese University of Hong Kong) was well attended by members of the community (photos).

March 28: Dr. Rowena He, formerly of the Department of History at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, spoke movingly to a packed audience of students, faculty, and community members on the importance of preserving historical memory (photos).
