Funding to launch, develop or translate innovative health-related research
The Health Innovation Funding Investment Awards support projects involving collaborations across UBC’s faculties, disciplines and campuses to undertake innovative health-research activities. Grants are sponsored through UBC Health. Deadline Nov. 30.

Apply to become one of UBC’s funding agency research advisors
Researchers interested in becoming advisors corresponding to the CIHR, SSHRC and NSERC domains are invited to apply. Advisor terms commence in January 2021. These are three-year terms, renewable once. Application deadline Dec. 7.

Access UBC's new research data storage platform
UBC researchers in any discipline working with large data sets requiring research-dedicated storage space are invited to apply for access to the new UBC ARC Chinook platform. Applications are open.

Canada Research Continuity Emergency Fund – Stage 4
Extended wage support for research-related personnel and trainees affected by COVID-19 and funded through non-government sources
Stage 4 of the Canada Research Continuity Emergency Fund (CRCEF) increases the maximum duration of wage support for eligible research personnel from 12 to 24 weeks. Internal deadline Nov. 16
 
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
Funding for ideas and solutions that break down barriers to creating new housing supply in Canada
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Impact Canada have announced a call for applications to their Housing Supply Challenge, Round 1: Data Driven – Solutions for informed decision-making. Internal Expression of Interest deadline Nov. 16.
 
Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research
Awards for building leading-edge health research programs
Applications for the 2021 Scholar Program are now open. Letter of Intent deadline Dec. 7, full application deadline Feb. 5, 2021. See ORS website for internal deadlines and details.
 
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
Support for short-term targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives
SSHRC Connection Grants support events and outreach to exchange knowledge and engage in research issues of value to the participants. Next year's full application deadlines are Feb. 1, May 1, Aug. 1, 2021.

Funding for initial-stage social sciences and humanities research
SSHRC Insight Development Grants support short-term research development projects, of up to two years, proposed by individuals or teams, for the development of new research questions, experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Final submission deadline Feb. 3, 2021.

Funding for long-term social sciences and humanities research partnerships
SSHRC Partnership Grants are for new or existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. Stage 1 application deadline Feb. 10, 2021.

Grants for short-term partnered research in the social sciences and humanities
SSHRC’s Partnership Engage Grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single, non-academic partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. Spring 2021 full application deadline Mar. 15, 2021.

Compute Canada
Research storage and computing through Compute Canada
Compute Canada is hosting two competitions through its 2021 Resource Allocation Competition, for research groups and for research platforms and portals. Application deadlines for each are Nov. 5.
 
Canada Foundation for Innovation
Funding to support infrastructure costs
CFI’s next full application deadline for the John R. Evans Leaders Fund is Feb. 15, 2021, for Attraction and Retention Candidates. Review campus-specific procedures and internal deadlines for the CFI application: Vancouver | Okanagan

Professor Claire Kremen wins 2020 Volvo Environment Prize
UBC conservation biologist Claire Kremen was lauded for her world-class research on how humanity can feed itself while also protecting biodiversity. Kremen is a President’s Excellence Chair in Biodiversity, with a joint appointment to the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Zoology.

Professor Navin Ramankutty awarded Wihuri International Prize
Ramankutty, of the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, received the award in recognition of his long-standing work on sustainable global food systems.

Service updates

COVID-19 research site: new option to submit publications
Researchers from UBC and affiliated hospital research sites are invited to continue to submit projects and profiles. The option to add a publication has also been created for researchers wishing to share their results and publications. Submissions encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing of COVID-19-related research across the university.
