Our plan & our people

The VPFO is made up of diverse individuals doing important work to support the university. Join us as we spotlight champions of our strategic plan and how they drive UBC forward.

Building a more innovative campus — one project at a time

A powerful duo in the VPFO, Aletha Utimati, a PMP-certified Project Manager and Sandy Sull, a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) bring completely different expertise but share a vision for an innovative campus, a passion for collaboration, and the ability to shift gears and adapt quickly to build an amazing and engaging Vancouver campus.

Aletha and Sandy had a chance to share what a typical day in their exciting jobs looks like, how their worlds collide and what accountability means to them in their respective roles.

Energy & Water Services Steamfitter crew completing major District Energy System project ahead of schedule

The District Energy System (DES) shutdown for the Aquatic Centre, tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ Student Residence (The Houses of the Ones Belonging to the Saltwater)?, and Exchange Residences took place on February 21. Impacting over 1,000 students, this large-scale shutdown required a lot of pre-planning and re-work to devise a plan that could get the Aquatic Centre and Student Recreation Centre back online as quickly as possible.

The Energy & Water Services (EWS) Steamfitter crew — Mike Carroll, Steve Blackett, Brett Harris, Tyler Cudmore, and Norm Esplana successfully executed the plan with their expert precision and expertise. The shutdown was broken down into two parts, and the crew delivered the first part of the shutdown 17 hours early and the second phase 24 hours ahead of schedule.

The community was ecstatic to have heat and hot water earlier than expected. Kudus to the EWS Steamfitter Crew on a job well done and their commitment to looking after UBC interests and assets!

UBC Vanpool Program Information Sessions

UBC has been participating in a Vanpool Pilot Program with TransLink and Modo over the last few years to provide people with a  more sustainable commute option. A select staff group was able to sign up to be matched with fellow UBC colleagues to travel to and from campus in a Modo carshare vehicle. The program was well received by the pilot group and recently TransLink made the program ongoing, which has opened it up to more staff and faculty at UBC.

You are invited to come to the lunch and learn sessions to learn more about the program.

Weekly Emergency Tip: Locating your gas meter at home

Do you know where your gas meter is located in case of an earthquake? Make sure to keep a wrench close to your gas meter. This way you are always ready to shut off the gas in an emergency. Once the gas is off, do not turn it back on, as only a registered gas contractor can do that safely.

Visit Fortis BC's website for more information on natural gas safety and the UBC Emergency Preparedness website for information on how to get prepared for an emergency.
