PhD Candidate Casey Collins’ peer-reviewed publication, a book chapter, was printed
Asian Studies PhD student Casey has published a chapter in the recent release Jewels, Jewelry, and Other Shiny Things in the Buddhist Imaginary. This book provides an opportunity to look beyond a common misconception about Buddhism and bring its lived tradition into wider discussion.

Dr. Dagmar Schwerk's interview with New Books Network on her book “A Timely Message from the Cave”
Dr. Schwerk was recently interviewed about her book, which is one of the pioneering works on Bhutanese Buddhism in the twentieth century. This book maps out a transregional Buddhist intellectual network centered on an influential Buddhist scholar, as well as the reception history of the Mahāmudrā controversy in Tibet and Bhutan.

Congratulations to Dr. Hessam Dehghani on receiving the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF)!
Dr. Dehghani has recently received TLEF funding for his project “Interactive Web-based Course Material for Learning Alphabet and Basic Literacy Skills for Heritage Students of Persian.”
The TLEF fund was created in 1991 to enrich student learning by supporting innovative and effective educational enhancements.

A Life in Service: Professor Emeritus Daniel L. Overmyer
Professor Daniel L. Overmyer had a very distinguished career, teaching and publishing widely in the field of Chinese popular religion. He joined the Department of Asian Studies at UBC in 1973 as an assistant professor, becoming full professor in 1984, and retiring in 2000. In November 2021, Professor Overmyer passed away after a short battle with cancer.
Asian Studies Assistant Professor C.D. Alison Bailey had the opportunity to lead a conversation with Professor Overmyer in August 2021. The video interview is now available on YouTube.

Guest Lecture with Professor Clark Chilson: Incentives to Secularize Buddhism
March 10, 6pm PT / 9pm ET
While occupying Japan in the 1940s, the US government officials banned religious activity to ensure that Japanese leaders would not use religion to inspire popular support for military aggression. To avoid these restrictions, the founder of Naikan began to present Naikan as non-religious. In doing so, the US occupiers and legal reformers wound up incentivizing secularization. UPDATE: This event will now be delivered fully online via zoom.

The annual Yip So Man Wat Memorial Lecture will continue this April with Professor Ban Wang from Stanford University. Focusing on national formation and international outlooks, Dr. Wang will discuss how ancient visions persist even as Chinese modernizers and revolutionaries adopted and revised the Western nation-state form. The event will be delivered in hybrid mode: in-person in the Asian Centre and online (subject to change due to COVID-19)

More Than One Way to Be a Tiger: Experiencing the 2022 Lunar New Year with “Tiger Power”
As 2022 ushers in the Year of the Tiger, this Lunar New Year celebration especially serves as a renewal of our tiger-like strength and courage. The UBC Chinese Language Program recently held the “Tiger Power: Roar into 2022 with Renewed Strength” event to not only honor the Lunar New Year, but also provide students from all Chinese language and literature classes with a chance to share uplifting quotes and role models with each other. With around 150 submissions, students across all Mandarin courses showcased numerous positive traits of the tiger, such as bravery and courage.

Amazon Web Services is hiring fluent Japanese and Korean candidates for their cloud support openings. Positions include Cloud Support Associate (CSA) and Cloud Support Engineer (CSE). 2022 Taiwan Scholarship and 2022 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver has announced two scholarship programs for 2022. The Taiwan Scholarship Program assists international students in undertaking undergraduate, master, or doctoral degree programs in Taiwan. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Program helps international students who want to study Mandarin in Taiwan. The deadline to apply is March 31 for both.

Summer Workshop for Graduate Students on Asian Art, Religion, and History at Fudan University
Fudan University invites applications to their 11th Annual Summer Workshop on Asian Art, Religion, and History, from June 23 to July 2, 2022. The theme of this year’s workshop is “Intellectual History of Asia in the Global Context". Advanced graduate students specializing in East Asian studies with Chinese language proficiency are encouraged to apply. Applications may be sent to brooks.jessup@berkeley.edu by May 1.
