UBC Facilities driving operational efficiency and resilience through the MacLeod Building renewal

The MacLeod Building Renewal project was recently completed in July 2022 after three years of hard work among UBC teams and partners.

In 2018, the four-storey concrete building was identified as a Routine Capital renewal candidate due to the high seismic risk, aged mechanical & electrical systems in the building, poor performing building envelope, aged finishes, accessibility issues and more, and received a project budget of $48 million.

“This was an incredible opportunity for our teams to come together and transform a historical building into a more efficient and sustainable facility that aligns with our university’s strategic goals,” notes Noel McNally, Project Manager in Project Services within UBC Facilities’ Infrastructure Development. “We look forward to seeing the UBC community learn, work and build meaningful connections in this inspiring space.”

Workday HR (HCM) and Payroll Enhancements List Now Live

The Integrated Service Centre (ISC) recently published its list of planned enhancements for Workday HR (HCM) and Payroll. Enhancements — changes that add new functionality or features, or improve an existing process — are an important part of the continuous improvement of Workday.

The ISC works with business owners, such as Central HR, to evaluate and make updates to our system that deliver value to UBC and the community. Sharing this list is a way to give visibility into this process.

The list of Workday Finance Enhancements was published in June 2022.

EDI: What’s the story on labour rights in Qatar?

Qatar's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup has put the country in the spotlight. Yet much of the scrutiny is directed not at the event’s sporting aspects, but rather at the labour rights and working conditions of the hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who are involved in readying the infrastructure and services needed to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

When done right, sports can bring us together

Sports can break down barriers and foster positive connections. While integration may not be the primary reason newcomers decide to get involved in sports – whether to cheer, volunteer or play on the field – those who participate are more likely to find common ground to connect with others.

Weekly Emergency Tip: Drop, cover and hold on

Practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON, the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes.

  • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
  • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

For more information about what to do during an earthquake, visit ready.ubc.ca/earthquake.
