New podcast platform for Iranian and Persianate Studies
We're excited to announce a new podcast series: Sokhan at UBC! The podcasts, recorded in either Persian or English, allow students to present on a variety of topics.
The first seven episodes have been produced by PERS 451 students under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Hoffmann.

Coexisting with coyotes
Coyotes live in and around UBC and can often be seen on campus. They are wild canids that share a recent common ancestor with domesticated dogs but are very misunderstood by people.
If you see a coyote while on campus, keep your distance, for their safety and yours.

One Left wins General Fiction category at the San Francisco Book Festival
One Left, the first Korean novel to focus exclusively on Korean "comfort women" co-translated by Associate Professor Bruce Fulton and Ju-Chan Fulton, was honored with top prize in the General Fiction category at the San Francisco Book Festival.

Dr. Janet Um receives OER Rapid Innovation Grant
Congratulations to Dr. Janet Um on receiving the OER Rapid Innovation Grant for her proposal entitled "Interactive Practice-Questions for Students Learning Sanskrit."
The Rapid Innovation Grant seeks to increase awareness and the adoption, adaption, and creation of open educational resources at UBC Vancouver Campus.

2024 NACHE International Conference held at UBC
Last month, nearly 100 international and Canadian participants convened for the first conference of the North American Chapter on the History of Emotion (NACHE) Biennial Conference held in Canada. The conference, co-organized by Dr. Alison Bailey, hosted sessions by those at the forefront of emotions studies while fostering opportunities for early career scholars and those new to the field.

New Approach to Furniture Procurement and Disposal
To reduce waste and carbon emissions in the Asian Studies Department, we are adopting a new approach to furniture procurement and disposal, prioritizing second-hand and circular practices. reuse-it! UBC is an online warehouse for UBC employees to find and dispose items ($1000 or less), such as furniture, office supplies, and more.

Call for Volunteers: Tonari Gumi Booths at the Powell Street Festival
The Powell Street Festival is coming up on August 3 and 4, and Tonari Gumi needs your help to make it a success! This fun event celebrates Japanese Canadian culture, and there are many ways you can get involved through Tonari Gumi. Volunteers are needed for: Food Booths, Community Booths, Kitchen at Tonari Gumi, Festival Prep (July 29 - August 2), Moving Volunteers (August 2), and Wrap-Up Volunteers. Whether you can help for a few hours or the whole weekend, please email Rie Bucci as soon as possible if you are interested.
Call for Volunteers: Powell Street Festival 2024
The Powell Street Festival Society is looking for volunteers for its 48th Annual Powell Street Festival. The festival is a celebration of Japanese Canadian arts and culture that includes musical performances, traditional dance, an amateur sumo wrestling competition, lots of Japanese food, and more! They are looking to fill a wide variety of positions, including but not limited to volunteer booth registration, set-up and take-down, Master of Ceremonies (MC), children’s tent volunteer, photography/videography. Submit applications as soon as possible.

For almost 50 years, Tonari Gumi has been building relationships and connections with the Japanese Canadian community throughout Metro Vancouver. Tonari Gumi is currently looking for Japanese speakers and learners interested in working as volunteers with opportunities including assisting with iPad classes, engaging in conversations with seniors, participating in activities together, and helping with fundraising events. If you're interested in being involved in a Japanese environment and experiencing Japanese culture, join the team!
