Maintaining cleanliness and safety of the Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF)
A great deal of project and operational work occurs each day at the BRDF and continues through the summer months.
A friendly reminder to make sure all residual material remaining from work (i.e., old gaskets, zap straps, rags, bolts, coffee cups etc.) is removed from the worksite when jobs are completed each day, to keep the facility clean and minimize safety hazards such as tripping, impeded access, and contamination.

Building Safety Capacity: Incident/accident investigations & documentation
Incident/accident investigations involving UBC Facilities workers are conducted by Joint Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC) employer reps and may require participation or assistance from management, JOHSC worker representatives, Safety & Risk Services, witnesses, and the injured/affected worker. Find more resources on incident investigation resources.
There are two types of investigations to be completed and submitted to UBC’s Centralized Accident/Incident Reporting System (CAIRS):
- Preliminary Investigation: Submit within 48 hours (2 days) after the incident/accident
- Provides a snapshot of what happened and identifies any unsafe conditions, acts, or procedures that must be addressed before work can resume safely until a full investigation has been completed.
- Full Investigation: Complete within 30 days after the incident/accident
- Provides updates and builds upon the Preliminary Investigation Report. The result of the investigation answers why and how the incident happened and the corrective actions. Upon completion of corrective actions, the report in CAIRS is to be updated.
For any questions, please contact Lori Takenaka, UBC Facilities Safety Advisor (lori.takenaka@ubc.ca).
EDI: Join us in celebrating Pride Month at UBC
June is Pride Month. It’s a time when we celebrate the diversity of LGBTQ+ communities, while acknowledging the long-standing fight for equality and justice. It is also an opportunity for us to reflect on and consider what each of us can do individually, and institutionally, to be inclusive — so that we all feel welcome and can fully access, participate, and thrive in all aspects of university life.
This CBC slideshow provides an overview of the strides LGBTQ+ people across Canada have made, from protests, and celebrations to parades for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans rights.
At UBC, we’re proud of our diverse students, faculty and staff. This June, explore the many Pride activities at UBC, connect with your community, help create positive space on and off campus and stand up for sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) diversity.
