Re-experience the Asian Studies 60th Anniversary Celebration
On December 6th, the Department hosted a celebration in honour of its 60th anniversary milestone. Due to the pandemic, the event took place over Zoom. However, the accessibility of this virtual evening allowed over 200 participants from around the world to gather and partake in the festivities. We are grateful to all who joined us.

Dr. Helena Wu receives Merit Award in the 2021 International Journal of Taiwan Studies Research Article Competition

Cantonese Speakers’ Secrets of Learning Mandarin: Two Students’ Stories
Over the past years, the Chinese Language Program has been dedicated to embracing the diversity of its learners’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds. To share their successful learning experiences, two Cantonese-speaking students volunteered to create videos on Mandarin-learning strategies and tips for Cantonese speakers.

Former UBC Undergraduate Student and Research Assistant with a Book Coming Out
Congratulations to Edward J. Barss, a former UBC student minor in Asian Language and Culture on his forthcoming book on Cross-strait affairs. During Barss's time at UBC, he worked as a research assistant to Dr. Christopher Rea. He shared that "I strongly believe that my time learning Chinese and studying with professors at UBC's Department of Asian Studies was immensely helpful in giving me the tools to succeed as a researcher."

In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Daniel L. Overmyer FRSC August 20th 1935 – November 24th 2021
On November 24th, Professor Daniel L. Overmyer FRSC, Emeritus Professor, died peacefully at home after a short battle with cancer, loving family members by his side. Professor Overmyer had a very distinguished career, teaching and publishing widely in the field of Chinese popular religion. He will be remembered for his scholarly rigour, collegiality, generosity and open-mindedness.

An Edutaining Night for Mandarin Learners: Recapping the “2021 Online Game Night” at the Chinese Language Program
In November, the UBC Chinese Language Program held the 2021 Online Game Night for its non-heritage learners. Education through entertainment, or edutainment, has become an increasingly important learning method for students to grasp a foreign language. Hence, learning languages through games has become an effective pedagogy and makes language learning relatable to students.
