ASIA 490Z Asian Classics - Fourth Year Seminar - ASIA CLSSCS SEM

This course will explore the transitional journey of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) throughout the high education system. Using a post-colonial framework, the seminar will engage with topics such as culture shock, assimilation, classroom power dynamics, and intersectionality. Interested students should send a short statement of interest to clayton.ashton@ubc.ca and enroll on the waitlist. Students will be moved into the course after approval from the faculty sponsor.

Gather ‘Round the Mooncake: CLP’s Special Mid-Autumn Reunion 2022

Around this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, the UBC Chinese Language Program staged the event of “Gather ‘Round the Mooncake” in honor of some of the hallmark traditions associated with this holiday. The delicious pastry of mooncakes was handed out in classes, and lantern riddles were displayed in classrooms. Most importantly, students and teachers had the chance to greet each other in jubilation to celebrate long-awaited reunions in the school community.

2022 Quiz On Korea

Exercise your knowledge of Korea and Korean culture through this event hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto. Non-Koreans who study Korean language are encouraged to join and prizes are available for the winners. This event takes place on October 22 at 2pm.

Applications for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme 2023 are open!

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme aims to enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations through fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign, young professionals, from 57 countries. Participants have the opportunity to gain valuable overseas work experience, learn about Japanese language and culture, and meet participants from around the world, while contributing to English language education and international understanding.The deadline for the 2023 Application Cycle is set for November 14.

Call for Papers: State of Hong Kong Studies—A Workshop

Students or scholars who are looking to contribute to Hong Kong studies are welcome to apply for this workshop The focus is on demonstrating the current state of Hong Kong within specific subtopics such as shifting paradigms, variegated praxes, manifold constituents, and variable scales. Postdoctoral Fellowship Announcement: Program on U.S.-Japan Relations, Harvard University

Scholars in social science who are conducting research on Japan’s external relations are invited to apply to become a postdoctoral fellow for the Program on U.S.-Japan Relations. This program is part of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs (WCFIA) at Harvard University and knowledge of the Japanese language is not required. The deadline to apply is December 16.
