Welcome to our new faculty member, Dr. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa!
We welcome a new faculty member in the new year. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa is our new Assistant Professor in Lifeways in Indigenous Asia at the Department of Asian Studies.
Dr. Sherpa is a Sharwa anthropologist from Pharak, southern part of Mt. Everest region in northeastern Nepal. Her research, writing and pedagogy focus on climate change and Indigeneity among Himalayan communities, guided by the question: How do we live in the midst of dying?

We are thrilled to share that Asian Studies professor, Rumee Ahmed has been named as Canada Research Chair in Theology and Ethics in recognition of excellence in his field of study. Dr. Ahmed is pursuing two interrelated research projects - one focusing mainly on theology and the other on ethics.

New Publication on reading practices and the scholarly culture of late Imperial China by recent Asian Studies alumnus Yinzong Wei
Congratulations to Asian Studies alumnus, Dr. Yinzong Wei (韋胤宗) who recently published a book based on his 2019 dissertation! The book, 《浩蕩游絲 : 何焯與清代的批校文化》(中华书局) was released last year in Chinese. The English version, Scholars and Their Marginalia in Late Imperial China (Brill), will be published on March 17, 2022.

ASIA 324: Literature of Hong Kong
This semester, UBC Asian Studies and the Hong Kong Studies Initiative are offering a course on the literature of Hong Kong! This course introduces literature from the late-19th century to the 21st century, with a goal to explore how the stories of Hong Kong are narrated and mediated over time. The course will address topics like the negotiation of identities, the politics of representation, and socio-political/cultural transformation in colonial and post-handover Hong Kong.

Li's seminar focuses on Dutch orientalist Robert van Gulik’s fictional work, The Chinese Maze Murders (1956), and the author's cartography of an extraordinary place – a maze. Li situates the maze into the broader socio-cultural context of the recording of “incense-seal pictures” in medieval and late imperial Chinese scent manuals.

The annual Yip So Man Wat Memorial Lecture will continue this winter with Professor Ban Wang from Stanford University. Focusing on national formation and international outlooks, Dr. Wang will discuss how ancient visions persist even as Chinese modernizers and revolutionaries adopted and revised the Western nation-state form. Cross-University Community Building via Singing: A Recap of the 2021 BC Chinese Bridge Mandarin Singing Contest
The 2021 BC Chinese Bridge Mandarin Singing Contest, organized by the UBC Chinese Language Program (CLP), drew a successful conclusion last December. It brought together a diverse community of Mandarin learners from a cluster of universities in British Columbia to showcase their creativity through music.
