Meet our second 2023/24 Lecturer of the Year: Nick Hall Each year, the Department of Asian Studies selects two Lecturers to recognize and celebrate excellence in teaching and service to the Department. It is with great pleasure that we announce Nick Hall as our second 2023/2024 Lecturer of The Year. "Nick Hall got his BA, MA, and PhD in this department, and, after teaching for a few years at Langara College, he joined our department as a Lecturer in Japanese Language in 2014. ...Nick’s early and effective use of a wide variety of pedagogical technologies and his versatility as an instructor and service committee member have enriched the department as a whole." |

Explore the development of Hong Kong cinema from the post-war period to now! Through the lens of cinema, the course examines the cultural implications and the social responses embedded in filmic representations and unfolds diverse local, diasporic and transborder perspectives in Hong Kong cinema. This course is in-person for Winter Term 2 with no prerequisite. ASIA 348: Poetic Life in Classical India Explore the rasas: fulfill your breadth requirements while discovering India’s incredible literary legacy of exquisite beauty and emotion! This course will delve into the poetry, theatre, and ornate prose writings of India in the classical period (c. 300-1300 CE). This course is in-person for Winter Term 2 with no prerequisite. ASIA 317: The Rise of Korean Civilization Learn about the evolution of life on the Korean peninsula from stone age whale-hunters through to soldiers and sailors fighting Japan in the 1590s. This course will look at images, videos and direct quotes to see how Koreans constructed and then maintained a distinctive political and cultural identity. This course is in-person for Winter Term 2 with no prerequisite. ASIA 337: The Korean People in Modern Times (1600 to the present) Trace South Korea’s progress from dictatorship to democracy and from poverty to prosperity. This course will cover four centuries of Korean history and will be aided by videos and by translations of what Koreans themselves have said about the times in which they lived. This course is in-person for Winter Term 2 with no prerequisite. ASIX 315: Hong Kong Diaspora in Canada Hong Kong has experienced a very unique history and developmental trajectory. Throughout this time, throngs of people from this unique corner of the world have migrated to modern-day Canada and drastically transformed the social make-up of the urban geography of these lands. This course will delve into topics such as identity, acculturation, language education, and many other topics associated with the different generations of Hong Kong diaspora in Canada. Call for Participants: Exploring Cultural Experiences and Sexuality Study Ever wondered how culture shapes your sexuality? The Sexuality and Well-being (SWell) Lab is looking for folks to participate in their latest research study! The study involves completing an online survey that asks about your background (e.g., age, culture), as well as your sexuality (e.g., attitudes, experiences). Participate as soon as possible and get a chance to win a $50 Amazon Gift Card! The UBC Pejvak Journal Call for Editors Pejvak is a student-run, peer- and faculty-reviewed, English language undergraduate publication dedicated to showcasing distinguished papers written by students on any cultural subject matter from Iran and the Persianate world. We are looking for editors to help with the selection and editing of papers for the 2024/25 publication of Pejvak. This volunteer role is open to all UBC students, and it has a time commitment of 4-7 hours/week. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Adjudication Opportunity for MURC 2025 The 2025 Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference is looking for adjudicators to evaluate oral and/or poster presentations during the conference. This role is a unique opportunity to give back to the UBC community, engage with innovative multidisciplinary research, and connect with fellow researchers across different fields. MURC will be held virtually and in person on March 15, 2025 at UBC (location TBD). Applications are due on November 29 at 11:59 pm. 2024 Japanese Language Program Writing Contest The Japanese Language Program is holding an essay and short fiction contest open to all students enrolled in JAPN courses in 2024 Winter Term 1 or 2, or those who have taken a JAPN course in the past. Bring out your creativity and explore diverse perspectives and ways of thinking through writing in a newly learned language! Submissions are due by November 30. Funding Opportunity for UBC Researchers: Join the CMS Bridging Divides Research Program The UBC Centre for Migration Studies invites UBC researchers to submit proposals to join our team of collaborators in the Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides research program. This initiative brings together scholars to explore innovative solutions to examine the relationship between Advanced Digital Technologies, digital communication tools, and migrant integration in Canada. Proposals are due by November 30. Summer 2025 Global Seminars: ASIA 476 - Applied Nepali and Indigenous Environmentalism Applications for Summer Global Seminars are open, including ASIA 476: Applied Nepali and Indigenous Environmentalism! Led by Assistant Prof. Pasang Yangjee Sherpa and Adjunct Prof. Binod Shrestha, this course will explore the intersection of language and environment on the ancestral territory of the Newa people, now known as Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Students will learn about the rich Newa civilization, practice their Nepali, and get exposure to Indigenous languages from all around Nepal currently spoken in the valley. Applications close on December 5, 2024. The University of British Columbia Magazine Short Fiction Contest 2025 All alumni who enjoy writing are invited to participate in The University of British Columbia Magazine’s second literary contest. Entrants from budding wordsmiths to established writers are welcome to submit original short fiction (from 1,500 to 1,750 words) that explicitly mentions and incorporates UBC in some capacity, such as setting or characters. The winning entrant will receive a $1,000 prize and have their story published and illustrated in The University of British Columbia Magazine’s Spring 2025 edition. Entries must be submitted online by December 6 at 11:59 pm. Applications Open: Innovation OnBoard (IOB) pitching competition Dreaming of launching a venture but not sure where to start? Innovation OnBoard (IOB) is UBC’s student-led program designed to help students bring ideas to life through mentorship, resources, and hands-on experience. Our annual pitching competition is officially open for applications, offering you a chance to dive into entrepreneurship in a low-risk, supportive environment. Finalists will compete for up to $5,000 in funding in addition to gaining hands-on experience working with seasoned entrepreneurs. Applications are open until December 25. UBC undergraduate students are invited to submit abstracts for the UCCS 3-Minute Thesis Competition 2025. This conference offers a valuable platform for students to present their research to UBC faculty and peers, fostering academic growth and collaboration. We welcome submissions from students exploring all fields of Chinese Studies, especially interdisciplinary works that open new avenues for understanding Chinese Studies. Please submit a 200-character (Chinese) or 150-word (English) abstract by January 15, 2025. Applications Open: 2024-2025 Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (ISI) Fund Applications are now open for the Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Fund to support projects advancing UBC's Indigenous Strategic Plan. An estimated $500,000 is available for applicants to help launch impactful Indigenous-centered initiatives. UBC faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend upcoming information sessions.
