Dr. Joshua Mostow Receives Japan-United States Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature The Japan-United States Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature is awarded annually to outstanding translations of Japanese works into English. We are pleased to share that our Professor of Pre-Modern Japanese Literature and Art, Joshua S. Mostow, received this year’s Prize for his book, Hyakunin’shu: Reading the Hundred Poets in Late Edo Japan (University of Hawaiʻi Press, 2024). |

Term 2 Graduate Seminar: A Literary History of Sex in Modern China (ASIA 502A) Tuesdays, 2:00pm-5:00pm How has Chinese writing about sex changed during the modern era? What discourses or norms related to sex has Chinese literature reflected, popularized, or repressed? Call for Proposals: Digital Project Exhibitions at new Array() new Array() is a pilot pop-up exhibition space dedicated to showcasing innovative digital scholarship and digital art by UBC students, faculty, and staff. Located in Koerner Library and accessible to both the University community and the broader public, this initiative will feature a rotating series of static (images) and mobile (video) works, displayed on an 80-inch monitor in a space with comfortable seating. Proposals from all disciplines are encouraged and submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Help Shape UBC’s Public Realm Through Art! UBC Inspired (part of Campus + Community Planning) is pleased to launch the Student Art + Placemaking Fund, supporting student-led initiatives that reimagine UBC’s outdoor spaces through public art and placemaking. Receive up to $2,500 in funding for temporary projects such as art installations, performance pieces, or other creative activations in public outdoor areas across campus. Individual and group projects are eligible. Apply by November 25. Applications Open: Young Scholars Visiting Scheme 2026 The Young Scholars Visiting Scheme 2026, organized by CUHK-CCK Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is now open for application. This Scheme aims to support young scholars conducting research in Chinese Studies to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Participants are expected to spend one academic term in residence at CUHK, actively engaging in scholarly activities and fostering academic exchange with CUHK faculty and students in 2026. Submit applications by November 28. Apply for CCEL Social Impact Grants for Students The Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL) empowers students to drive social change through funding for meaningful projects in partnership with BC-based community organizations. Up to $10,000 of funding is available for your project. Students with questions or who would like to book an advising appointment are encouraged to email Jacquie (she/her) at jacquie.kwok@ubc.ca. Submit a Notice of Intent (NOI) by December 1. Call for Submissions: Nostagain’s 2026 Symposium and Research Creation Expo The Nostagain Network invites students, researchers, artists, professors, and nostalgia enthusiasts to submit works which engage with nostalgia. This year's theme is FRAMES OF REFERENCE. Both research creation works and paper presentations are welcome. All submissions are due by December 19. Call for proposals: Open Educational Resource Grants 2026/27 Grants of up to $25,000 are available for UBC Vancouver faculty who wish to address course material affordability and access, through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER), as required materials into their credit courses.
