The ceremony for Asian Studies graduates will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 4:00pm, and we will also be hosting a reception prior at 1:00pm to further congratulate our graduates, their families, and friends!

Kutiyattam: A Thousand Years of Sanskrit Theatre
Kutiyattam (“Performing Together”) is a UNESCO-inscribed Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity preserved for at least a thousand years in the state of Kerala, in South India. A mesmerizing and ornate blend of performance, costume, and rhythm, it is the sole surviving form of traditional Sanskrit theatre in India.
Learn about and experience this traditional art through performances by the Nepathya Ensemble from May 17 to 18.

Looking Back on Another Year of Celebrating Korean Culture at UBC
It's been an eventful year for the Korean Language and Culture Program! From K-pop dance events to language exchanges, the program has hosted numerous events over the 2023-2024 academic year to foster community and celebrate Korean culture and language.
The Korean Language and Culture Program thanks their dedicated faculty and student volunteers, as well as the students who attended their events!

Special issue of Iran Namag co-edited and introduction co-authored by Dr. Mostafa Abedinifard
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Mostafa Abedinifard for co-editing the latest issue of Iran Namag – a special issue on Iraj Pezeshkzad's humor – as well as co-authoring the introduction.
His introduction, titled "Iraj Pezeshkzad's Revolutions: The Humorist's Serious Legacy," sheds light on Pezeshkzad's lesser-known serious writings on history and provides a backdrop to his nuanced perspectives.

Dr. Xueshun Liu comments on solar eclipse records in China
Chinese Language Lecturer Xueshun Liu recently commented on the oldest verifiable solar eclipse records carved in China in a special report on the April 8 total solar eclipse by the Scientific American.
He speaks on the importance of divination during in the Shang dynasty, the first Chinese period that left behind written records.

The "Patterns as Poetic Practice: A Global Conversation Through Textile Cartographies" exhibition, which is hosted at the UBC’s Asian Library will be held from May 7th to July 3rd. This collaboration between the Art Education Program, The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy and the Asian Library offers an enriching experience that transcends cultural boundaries and celebrates the artistic beauty of textile traditions from various corners of the globe.

Call for Applications: Volunteer at Tonari Gumi
For almost 50 years, Tonari Gumi has been building relationships and connections with the Japanese Canadian community throughout Metro Vancouver. Tonari Gumi is currently looking for Japanese speakers and learners interested in working as volunteers with opportunities including assisting with iPad classes, engaging in conversations with seniors, participating in activities together, and helping with fundraising events. If you're interested in being involved in a Japanese environment and experiencing Japanese culture, join the team! Contact Rie Bucci, the Tonari Gumi Volunteer Coordinator to apply at your earliest convenience.
Call for Volunteers: UBC Arts Vancouver Summer Program
The UBC Faculty of Arts is looking for enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers to support international students during the 2024 UBC Vancouver Summer Program. Cultural Ambassador Volunteers (CAV) will be working closely with the Arts VSP Student Support Assistants and the International Summer Program Coordinator to provide visiting students with a supportive, meaningful and fun exchange experience. CAVs will engage with Arts VSP students by encouraging participation in a range of socio-cultural events. Apply by May 20.
