Bruce Fulton Awarded the 22nd Manhae Grand Prize in Literature
Dr. Bruce Fulton, Chair in Korean Literature and Literary Translation, was recognized for his years of teaching Korean literature and literary translation and his nearly 40 years of worth of translation work with Ju-Chan Fulton. Previous prize recipients include the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

Alison Bailey Awarded the Hampton New Faculty Award Research Grant
The $10,000 grant will support Dr. C. D. Alison Bailey complete research for her book, A Shield for a Pillow: A Cultural Study of Filial Revenge in China. The project is an interdisciplinary study of filial revenge in China, as act and as discourse, as legal dilemma and literary trope, from its earliest beginnings to its modern manifestations.

Marc Turin Awarded SHHRC Grant
This grant was awarded to Dr. Marc Turin for his project documenting the endangered oral tradition of Shadpa. The research team will support the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of this unique oral tradition, aligned with the broader goal of Tibetan language standardization and conservation.

Tianzhu Book Prize Lecture
Sunday, August 12
Professor Jiang Wu, winner of the inaugural Tianzhu Book Prize for Excellence in Chan Studies, delivered a lecture on Dilemma and Dogma in Chan Studies: Further Thoughts on East Asian Buddhism in Later Centuries. This lecture was also part of the closing ceremony for the UBC Intensive Program on Buddhism.

Himalaya Program Welcome Reception and Photo Exhibition Opening: Life with the Forest in Sikkim

Scholar and artist Saori Ogura lived in Sikkim to better understand the indigenous Lepcha, or Rongkup, people’s ways of life. Saori captured portraits of the villagers’ warmth and strength, as well as their livelihoods – especially the great diversity of traditional crops which are on the cusp of disappearing.

The Age of Irreverence at the UBC Bookstore

Drawing from his award-winning book The Age of Irreverence: A New History of Laughter in China, Dr. Christopher Rea gave a talk at the UBC Bookstore about how the first decades of the twentieth century transformed how Chinese people thought and talked about what’s funny. 2018/19 John Howes Lecture in Japanese Studies

This year’s lecture with Dr. Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney discussed “The Social and Political Lives of Japanese Cherry Blossoms.” With roughly 200 people in attendance, the lecture focused on the history of the cherry blossom in Japan, and the ways that the image has been used and even abused, especially during WWII.
