Reminder: Coffee Break with Frank Laezza April 19

Our new VP Finance & Operations Frank Laezza will be visiting the University Services Building (USB) on April 19 for a meet and greet with Facilities folks. He will be in the Atrium from 9:00 to 9:30 am for morning coffee break, touring some of our shops. Please take the opportunity to say hello and get acquainted!

Learning beyond the classroom

Last month, UBC Facilities’ Building Operations was invited by Dr. Karen Bartlett, a Professor in the School of Population & Public Health (SPPH) to present to her Master of Science graduate class in the Occupational & Environmental Hygiene graduate program.

Building Operations presented the university’s Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Program and highlighted UBC’s established operations and maintenance practices before, during and beyond COVID-19. The presentation was followed by a site tour of the mechanical room and Operations Centre in the University Services Building.

Kudos to the team for strengthening UBC Facilities’ position as a trusted partner to our campus communities!

Roadwork on University Boulevard

University Boulevard will be partially closed from April 17–August 19 due to construction in the area. The first stage of this work will be along University Boulevard in the westbound lane.

Starting April 17, no buses will be using the University Boulevard bus loop due to construction. All bus stops will be closed and trolley buses will be turning around at Blanca.

All parking will be closed and all westbound traffic will be detoured across the median so that there is two-way traffic on the south side of University Boulevard.

Find the most up-to-date information on the UBC Campus + Community Planning website.

Building Safety Capacity: Orienting and Training New and Young Workers

As an employer, you are responsible for ensuring that your workers are prepared for the job before they start working.

Providing effective orientation and training is the best way to prevent workplace incidents that can cause injuries or damage to property and equipment. This includes training workers on their specific tasks, and providing supervision and ongoing training so that they continue to work safely. Even experienced workers will require re-orientation if their work circumstances change or new hazards develop (i.e. new work process, new equipment, or new work location).

Safety and Risk Services provides online mandatory new employee training and a monthly Facilities-specific orientation to new Facilities employees.

For more information, including links to mandatory training at UBC and a safety orientation checklist, visit the Safety & Risk Services website, or contact Lori Takenaka (lori.takenaka@ubc.ca).

Municipal Services & Building Operations participate in ‘Clean-up the Campus’ event for Earth Day

Municipal Services’ Waste Management team will be hosting a fairly “down-to-earth” Earth-Day event on April 27 from 12:00–2:00 pm at the Waste Management loading dock.

Held annually, this will be Waste Management’s third annual participation in Earth Day. The event is open to teams in Building Operations to attend and may expand to the rest of Facilities and other departments in the future.

What to Expect at the Celebration

The event will include a ‘Clean-up the Campus’, where participants will be teamed up and sent on a one-hour litter collection session in assigned clean-up zones within the Campus core grounds. While participants are busy picking up litter, they also have an opportunity to take part in a scavenger hunt. There will be markers scattered throughout the various clean-up zones to highlight Earth Day. Those who find the markers will win a prize at the end of the event.

Teams will bring back all collected litter to the event location (Waste Management loading dock) for sorting, where coffee (please bring your own mug as no disposable cups will be provided) and snacks will be available for all participants.

Celebration for the Planet Schedule on April 27

  • Noon – Information session on Earth-Day and information for “Clean-up the Campus” teams at the Waste Management loading dock. Don't forget to wear your pink shirts!
  • 12:15 pm – Teams are sent out to assigned clean-up zones
  • 1:15 pm – Teams returning to the meeting location with collected waste (and prize markers)
  • 1:30 pm – Prizes given out, waste sorting, coffee/snacks and picture taking.

Sign-up sheets will be posted in shops from April 10–21.
