Reporting workplace accident or incident

All accidents or incidents involving UBC workers must be immediately reported to your responsible supervisor and online through the UBC Centralized Accident/Incident Reporting System (CAIRS).

What should I do if this is a serious accident/incident?

If you have had a serious incident in your workplace, even one where no one gets hurt, notify your supervisor or someone responsible for the department as soon as possible, along with Safety & Risk Services (SRS). UBC may be required to notify WorkSafeBC and potentially other regulatory agencies immediately.

Under the Workers Compensation Act, the following incidents must be immediately reported to WorkSafeBC. Any incident that:

  • Results in serious injury to or the death of a worker;
  • Involves a major structural failure or collapse of a building, bridge, tower, crane, hoist, temporary construction support system or excavation;
  • Involves the major release of a hazardous substance;
  • Involves a fire or explosion that had potential for causing serious injury to a worker; or
  • Blasting incident causing personal injury;
  • Dangerous incident involving explosives, where or not there is personal injury.

SRS will assist UBC departments in notifying WorkSafeBC of immediately reportable incidents.

If you have any questions, contact Lori Takenaka, UBC Facilities Safety Advisor at lori.takenaka@ubc.ca.

Planon: What happens when a Work Order is cancelled in Planon or PMFS

When an order is cancelled, all the hours that are on the order get cancelled as well and the charges do not get billed. Since it is no longer considered active work, employees won't succeed when trying to enter any time against it.

It is important to ensure that time is only entered against active work orders to accurately track the time and resources being used for a specific project or task.

If a client tells you our support is no longer required and the issue has been resolved, please complete the Work Order instead of cancelling it.

Seminar: Everything you need to know about occupational sensitization

Weekly Emergency Tip: Do you have earthquake insurance?

In Canada, there are 4,000 recorded earthquakes each year.

Earthquake insurance accounts for 5% to 50% of insurance premiums depending on where you live, which may explain why less than 65% of British Columbians who live in high-risk areas have this added protection. Since insurance is available for this type of event, earthquake damage is not eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance.

Learn more about what to do following an earthquake on the UBC Emergency Preparedness website and the Government of Canada website
