Celebrate Diwali with the Asian Library!
Diwali or Deepavali, which means “a row of lights”, is the most widely celebrated festival in India and throughout the Indian diaspora. The festival celebration, which typically lasts from five to seven days, is celebrated by several South Asian Communities, and by the majority of Indians regardless of faith, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Christians. On Diwali, people decorate their houses with diyas, candles as well as colourful lights, and they share gifts and recite prayers.
Experience the diversity of South Asian culture through music and light refreshments on Wednesday, October 23 from 12:00pm at the Asian Centre Auditorium!
Attendance is free and no registration is required.

Sustainability Initiative Committee at the 2024 Vancouver Climate Strike
On September 20, the Sustainability Initiative Committee joined thousands of community members in this year’s Climate Strike. We marched from City Hall to the Vancouver Art Gallery, where participants gathered to enjoy performances and hear about the intersectionality between climate justice and gender, Indigenous, and labor rights. This year’s strike called to: 1) stop new oil and gas projects; 2) keep gas out of new buildings; and 3) protect people, nature, and Indigenous rights.
Looking ahead, the Sustainability Initiative Committee plans to come together next year to design signs for the strike, before uniting on the streets once again. Stay tuned for updates, and we hope you will join us to show solidarity and support for a more sustainable future!

The Jamaloddin Khanjani Family Scholarship is a $4,100 scholarship that has been made available through an endowment established by Farid Rohani in honor of Jamaloddin Khanjani, a successful businessman who, because he was Baha’i, lost his business after the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran. The scholarship is in honor of Mr. Khanjani’s commitment to and support of education and human rights. The scholarship will support a UBC graduate student whose studies focus on human rights and related aspects of public policy and global affairs. The deadline to apply is October 13 at 11:45 PM.

Generous funding opportunities for MA candidates include fellowships, tuition waiver, health insurance assistance and stipends for Teaching Assistantships (TAs). CCEL Social Impact Grants for Students – $1,500 to $10,000 of funding available per project
At the Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL), we empower students to drive social change through funding for meaningful projects in partnership with BC-based community organizations. Our grants ($1,500 - $10,000) support students in co-designing and implementing impactful initiatives that directly address community needs. We encourage bold, creative ideas and support collaborations in tackling real-world issues. Dive in, explore new possibilities, and gain hands-on experience addressing societal challenges. Students and community organizations with questions can book an advising appointment with Jacquie (she/her). Feel free to email her at jacquie.kwok@ubc.ca. Applications close on January 31, 2025.
