Prior to joining UBC, she taught Japanese at various institutions and served as the coordinator of the Japanese language program at the University of Alberta. A huge congratulations to Professor Sharalyn Orbaugh, our Head of Department, on receiving the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation for FY 2024 in recognition of her contributions in promoting Japanese research in Canada.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to those with outstanding achievements internationally, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other regions.

Professor Christopher Rea discusses Where Research Begins on Taiwanese podcast 人文來風
The Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy at Academia Sinica recently published a 29-min podcast episode (Episode 117) on 人文來風 about the Taiwanese edition of Dr. Chrisopher Rea's book, Where Research Begins 研究的起點 (co-authored with Stanford professor Thomas S. Mullaney).
Recorded with the book's translator, Hsu Hui-lin 許暉林, Dr. Rea explores what to research and why it matters.

Move More, Learn More is back!
Are you interested in wellbeing and physical activity but don’t know where to start? Move More, Learn More is a 7-week interactive health education program designed for Asian women (trans women welcome) but all self-identified women are welcome to participate. This specialized program includes a variety of health learning topics and private group physical activity sessions for participants to try out new ways to move.

Pasang Yangjee Sherpa invited to speak at the Stockholm World Water Week
Assistant Professor Pasang Yangjee Sherpa was recently invited to speak at the Stockholm World Water Week panel “Protecting Himalayan Source Waters for Regional Peacebuilding“, commenting on the necessity for "peacebuilding and water security [to be] community led, involving intentional efforts on the ground to care for the human and more-than-human relations".

This course is in-person for Winter Term 1 with no prerequisite.
ANTH 202B - Archeology of Ancient China
ANTH 202B invites you to embark on an enthralling exploration of ancient China. This course seeks to illuminate how archaeology has profoundly rewritten historical narratives and transformed our understanding of the making of Chinese culture and society.

Sessional Lecturer Parboti Roy comments on the resignation of Bangladesh’s prime minister
News broke last month that prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who led Bangladesh for 15 years, had resigned amid a mass uprising against her rule. Our sessional lecturer Parboti Roy commented on the resignation and the excitement for the interim government headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Participate in the Global Experiential Education Program (GEEP)
The Global Experiential Education Program (GEEP) is an initiative by the UBC Office of Regional and International Community Engagement that aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning (theory) and application (practice) to address pressing global issues. Through curricular (for-credit) and co-curricular (not-for-credit) programming, GEEP will provide students with experiential education opportunities on projects designed and led by global community partners both regionally and internationally. Arts Co-op Program Accepting Undergraduate Applications for 2024/25 Academic Year
Co-operative Education (Co-op), allows you to explore a range of careers during four or eight-month paid work terms. The Arts Co-op Program partners with employers across Canada and around the world in the non-profit, private business, and government sectors to help prepare you for your future career. Call for Applications: Editor for the Journal of Historical Studies (JHS)
The UBC Journal of Historical Studies showcases the finest historical research from undergraduates. Editors contribute to selecting articles for publication, engage in the peer-review process, and work closely with authors and co-editors throughout the publishing process. This is an opportunity for students to gain experience in academic editing by playing an active role in advancing and sharing cutting-edge historical research. If you are interested in joining, please submit your résumé and one writing sample (preferably in the history discipline) as a PDF. The application deadline is September 20 at 11:59 PM.
Call for Paper Submissions: Journal of Historical Studies (JHS)
If you have a paper demonstrating your argumentative ability or a novel historical angle, submit it to the UBC Journal of Historical Studies, the History Department’s student-run publication! Papers do not have to be written for the history department; any paper that involves history is welcome. The paper cannot have been previously published nor been submitted for consideration to another journal, and should have received a minimum grade of 85%. Independent research is also welcome. The submission deadline is October 5 at 11:59 PM.
Black China Caucus: China 101
Black China Caucus is a collaborative effort that curates targeted resources aimed at encouraging the professional development and advancement of Black professionals in the China space. The China 101 program provides students and young professionals with information about China-related opportunities, including career options and trajectories in the China field.
