Masks required in UBC public indoor spaces until June 30

As there are now signs of further Omicron variants and increased case numbers, experts have indicated that BC is about to enter into a sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of these factors, UBC has made the decision to maintain the requirement to wear masks until June 30, 2022.

UBC will be transitioning from COVID-19 Safety Plans to a Communicable Disease Prevention Framework starting May 1, 2022. More information will be shared on the Safety & Risk Services website next week.

If your unit requires additional disposable masks, please contact safety.risk@ubc.ca.

Lowering the flag on the National Day of Mourning

The Canada flag (at Flag Pole Plaza) and the BC, Musqueam and UBC flags (at the North Plaza of the Life Building) on the UBC Vancouver Campus and the Canada, BC, Okanagan Nation Alliance and UBC flags at UBC Okanagan will be lowered on Thursday, April 28, 2022, in recognition of the National Day of Mourning, to remember lives lost in the workplace and resolve to prevent future tragedies.

We stand together as a university community to remember Harmandeep Kaur, a member of the UBC Okanagan Campus Security team, whose tragic death at the end of February was felt across UBC as a whole.

Please read a message written to the community in early March from Dr. Lesley Cormack, UBC Okanagan’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal and seek out the supports and services offered to students, faculty and staff.

University Boulevard closure extended to May 15

The closure of the University Boulevard (UBlvd) bus loop has been extended from May 1, 2022, to May 15, 2022 (exact date to be determined). The bus loop is closed due to three projects under construction simultaneously — School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) Building, Gateway Health Building, and a utility steam tunnel repair.

The work for the steam tunnel repair at the far west end of UBlvd is anticipated to complete on May 2, 2022. Once complete, access to this area will be available. The UBlvd Lot will remain open.

Flaggers will no longer be required to run single-lane vehicle traffic on the north side of UBlvd since traffic will be able to travel around the loop.

Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to be detoured to the south side of UBlvd.

The detour around the north side of the Gateway construction site will remain in place and accessible to residents and delivery only, to reduce the amount of traffic on that temporary roadway.

UBC Okanagan Skeena Residence becomes the first Passive House-certified student residence in Canada

UBC Okanagan Skeena Residence has successfully earned its Passive House Certification, making it the first student residence in Canada and second in North America to receive this globally recognized certification.

Defined by sun floods, through views, and candy-coloured stairwells, the six-storey Passive House Skeena residence will provide 220 bedrooms and amenity space to UBC Okanagan students.

Skeena’s energy consumption is 70 kWh/m2 per year, which includes an annual heating demand of just 7.1 kWh/m2, allowing the building to provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water without a fossil fuel connection. In fact, the residence is so energy efficient that at the coldest point in the year, more than ¼ of the heat required for the building is supplied by students’ body heat.

EDI: Day of Silence – How will You Break the Silence?

April 22, 2022 was the Day of Silence, an annual event in April that was first established in 1996 by students from the University of Virginia, to recognize the LGBTQ2+ youth and the systemic issues they faced within the school system.

By staying silent throughout the day, people are expressing their solidarity with LGBTQ2+ students who have felt silenced. It has now expanded into workplaces, university campuses, and beyond.

GLSEN is a leading education organization working to create safe and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 schools for all. Watch their video to learn more about the significance of the Day of Silence in combatting the harmful effects of anti-LGBTQ harassment and discrimination in education.
