Congratulations to Dr. Helena Wu on receiving the 2024 Public Engagement Award!
The UBC-V Public Humanities Hub Public Engagement Awards are given to individuals and partner organizations who have exhibited outstanding public humanities engagement in the past two years, and whose work has contributed to the expansion of the range of voices in public discourse.
Dr. Wu was recognized for her use of both conventional and creative channels to foster timely exchanges about important social issues at both local and international levels, the care she has taken to develop a platform for a diverse range of scholars and filmmakers, as well as her significant community outreach to foster knowledge exchange and enable future collaborations.

Helena Wu (Asian Studies) and Hedy Law's (Music) bilingual scholarly articles have been featured in the exhibition ”Soundtrack of Our Lives: Joseph Koo x James Wong x the Rise of Cantopop”, organized by Taikwun in Hong Kong. The exhibition is currently taking place in Hong Kong until August 28, 2024.

Building a toolbox of technical and soft skills: Cantonese Teaching Workshops Recap
The UBC Cantonese Language Program hosted its third and fourth installments of teaching workshops on May 11 and July 12, 2024.
Recognizing the challenges faced by Cantonese educators, these workshops have provided community teachers an opportunity to gain insights from experienced practitioners. Through connecting teachers all over the world and fostering a sense of community, the Cantonese Language Program is working to advance the field of Cantonese language education.

UBC Asian Library renovations create dynamic spaces for collaboration
UBC Asian Library has benefited from two substantial renovation projects on both the upper and main floors of the branch, completed earlier this year.
The reimagined space includes extensive improvements to seating and study spaces, much needed repairs, and an overhaul of the book collection stacks and displays.

Threads of Tradition: Library Resources on Textiles and Patterns from Asia
UBC Asian Library contributed a variety of books on textiles and patterns specific to Asian countries, highlighting the powerful stories and rich cultural heritage behind these textile artworks to an exhibit earlier this year: “Patterns as Poetic Practice: A Global Conversation Through Textile Cartographies.”

Book display: Incense in Traditional Asia
UBC Asian Library is pleased to announce their latest exhibit: a compact yet captivating book display centered on the traditions of incense and incense ceremonies in Japan and its neighbouring countries.
This exhibit invites you to explore the cultural significance and historical evolution of incense and its use in these regions. The diverse array of books showcases ceremonial utensils and accessories in their artistic splendour, various types of incense burners from across Asia, and the aesthetics of the incense ceremony as depicted in Japanese literary works, among other topics.
This exhibit will be available from August 1-30, 2024.

Wildfires in Jasper: UBC addresses various initiatives
The town of Jasper is grappling with the aftermath of one the most devastating wildfires in its history. The blaze, which began late last month, has left insurmountable destruction.
This disaster is a stark reminder of the increasing frequency of wildfires – a phenomenon closely linked to climate change with the rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and changing weather patterns. In response to these challenges, UBC has addressing wildfire challenges through various initiatives.

Tonari Gumi is currently looking for Japanese speakers and learners interested in working as volunteers with opportunities including assisting with iPad classes, engaging in conversations with seniors, participating in activities together, and helping with fundraising events.
