The second edition of the UBC Asian Independent Cinema Showcase will open with the Vancouver premiere of Kissing the Ground You Walked On [Synopsis | Trailer], an award-winning film about desire and illusion in the urban space by Macau director Hong Heng-fai.
The screening will be followed by a virtual conversation with director Hong Heng-fai. The film is in Cantonese with English subtitles, and the conversation will be conducted in English.

Clara Law: Drifting Petals, Floating Lives
A Retrospective Presented by the UBC Asian Independent Cinema Showcase & The Cinematheque

The Cinematheque and the UBC Asian Independent Cinema Showcase are pleased to present a select retrospective surveying the remarkable, decades-spanning oeuvre of Clara Law. Curated in concert with the director and Eddie Fong, the six-film program features each of the following titles, all boasting new restorations, plus the couple’s latest collaboration Drifting Petals (2021), a DIY ghost story plumbing personal and political traumas.
Law and Fong will join the audience via Zoom for Q&As following the first screening of each film in the retrospective.

ASIA 325: Hong Kong Cinema
A survey of the cinema of Hong Kong from the post-war period to the present.
ASIA/HIST 373: History of Hong Kong
Explores the history, culture, and identities of Hong Kong from the port’s pre-colonial settings in the early nineteenth century to its post-colonial contexts.
ASIX 315: Hong Kong Diaspora in Canada
A broad overview of the experiences of migrants from the Hong Kong region to Canada from the 1800s to modern times, focusing on aspects of identity formation and cultural adjustment.
CNTO: Cantonese Language Courses
The University of British Columbia is the only Canadian university to offer a comprehensive, for-credit Cantonese language program. |

December 13 & 14: Co-organized by the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative and the Hong Kong Studies Program of the University of Hong Kong, the second "Theory Hong Kong" conference explored knowledge production and the study of Hong Kong through theoretical perspectives and by using Cantonese as a medium. The keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Laikwan Pang (Chinese University of Hong Kong) and was attended by nearly a hundred audience members across the world (photos).
