Normally, five prizes are awarded each year, one in each of the following disciplines: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, and engineering. In last year’s competition, UBC researchers received awards in two of these five categories.
The deadline is June 2, 2023. Nominations must come from experts in the fields. In some instances, institutional nominations under UBC’s President are also possible.
Nominators are encouraged to contact the VPRI’s Office of Research Prizes and Awards (ORPA) for more information and for nomination support, including consultation and review of materials.
For all awards, departments, divisions, institutes, schools and faculties are strongly encouraged to embed equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) considerations in their nomination strategies.

The 2024-2025 ADFM LEADS Fellowship Call for Applications Are Open!
The ADFM LEADS Fellowship Program is designed for those who are interested in learning more about whether senior leadership positions in academic family medicine might be a good career fit and for those who aspire to become a senior leader in academic medicine or an academically affiliated health system (e.g., department chair, service line leader, associate dean, vice chair).
The goal of the fellowship is to train pluripotent leaders to have the skills/understanding of a high-level leadership position like a department chair/service line leader/etc. and who would also be competitive for other leadership positions beyond the scope of their current role within an academic medical center or an academic-affiliated health system. It is designed to be complementary to other programs and to also offer something unique without overlap, with an intent to provide high-level leaders for the discipline.

Congratulations to Lorna McRae, and Drs. Cecilia Jevitt and Bill Rowe on the publication of their chapter, “Perinatal Substance Use Disorders,” in the 4th edition of The Oppression of Addiction
Drs. Jevitt and Rowe published the original chapter from the United States. With the writing of the 4th edition, they wanted to be sure the social work practice was compatible with Canadian standards. Lorna McRae provided the perfect expertise. Lorna, who was a social worker before becoming a midwife, provides care to pregnant individuals with substance use concerns in Victoria. She is a long time UBC Midwifery faculty member and clinical preceptor. This chapter provides general information on substance use in pregnancy and is useful reading for any health care student or provider.

This study was developed in collaboration with the Canadian Society of Breast Imaging.
