Drs. Alex Wyatt, Jim Johnson, Deborah Money and Stuart Turvey at the Building Bridges event on February 9, 2024.

Building Bridges: Connecting Foundational Science and Clinical Practice in Precision Health and Translational Medicine

The Building Bridges event was a great opportunity for faculty and staff to learn about successful partnerships between clinicians and foundational scientists. The majority of the participants were from the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences Institute, and were research/admin staff, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows.

Drs. Stuart Turvey, Jim Johnson and Poul Sorensen provided introductions on Precision Health, Life Sciences Institute and the Academy of Translational Medicine. The session featured two speakers sharing their experiences, Dr. Deborah Money, from a clinician’s perspective, and Dr. Alex Wyatt, from a foundational scientist’ perspective. Dr. Money presented on a successful collaboration between herself a veterinary scientist and provided advice on how to engage clinicians in research projects. Dr. Alex Wyatt shared ongoing active collaborations with BC Cancer medical oncologists and provided guidance on various methods foundational scientists can approach and initiate collaborations with clinicians. Following presentations, a Q&A discussion was held. The meeting concluded with refreshments and networking, providing attendees an opportunity to connect and continue discussions. Overall the meeting was well received, with many participants providing positive feedback about the event.
