Gamify Your Language Learning: A Rewind of 2023 Chinese Game Night

Recently, the UBC Chinese Language Program hosted its 2023 annual Chinese Game Night on February 10. Students played games like Uno, Monopoly, Pictionary, Who Am I, "Hot Potato", and Chinese chess while communicating exclusively in Mandarin. This event brought students from different language backgrounds together and provided students an opportunity to relax, socialize, and practice their language skills.

2023 Asian Studies Summer Teaching Assistantships

Check out some of the Summer Teaching Assistantships available under the Department of Asian Studies for the 2023 Summer session. These positions require high level of fluency in the language/subject to be taught and ability to prepare teaching materials. The period of employment is from May 15 – July 2, 2023 for Term 1 and July 4 – August 27, 2023 for Term 2. Applications are due on March 31.

Call for Applications: 2023 Glorisun International and Intensive Program with Peking University

The FROGBEAR project is accepting applications for the 2023 Glorisun International and Intensive Program on Buddhist Studies. Lasting from August 9 to August 22, this year’s program is composed of a series of conferences in Hong Kong from August 9–12, followed by teaching segments at Mount Kuaiji 會稽山, which bears unique importance for Chinese civilization and for East Asian Buddhism. Read program details on the Glorisun Global Network website. The selected UBC applicant will receive $1,000 CAD travel subsidy. Laura Bassi Scholarship

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 provides editorial assistance for academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study or broadly construed topics within their disciplines. This scholarship is open to all disciplines from undergraduates, master’s, and doctoral candidates and there are awards of $500-$2,500 available depending on what type of candidate you are. Applications are due on March 31 for Spring 2023.

Meiji University Short-term Japanese Language Program (Summer 2023)

Meiji University is currently accepting applicants for their short-term Japanese Language Program for Summer 2023. This 2-week short-term Japanese language program is in July-August 2023 and includes Japanese language study, project work, and cultural exchange activities. Applications are currently open and may be closed when the capacity is reached or until April 9.

Open Scholarship for Education

The Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE) is a three-month online program that will help develop foundational knowledge of Open Scholarship, Open Education, and Open Research. There is also opportunity for optional synchronous sessions each month where one can engage with various practitioners in the different areas of open scholarship. Registration is open until May 1.

8th JLPP International Translation Competition

The JLPP is a project sponsored by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs to promote awareness and appreciation of Japanese literature, as well as to nurture aspiring translators. Three prize winners will be selected and they will be awarded a certificate, a trophy, an opportunity to participate in translation developmental programs, and a monetary prize of ¥1,000,000 for Grand Prize Winners. Submissions will be accepted starting June 1.

Apply for the UBC Open Access Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences Research

The UBC Open Access Fund for Humanities and Social Sciences Research assists UBC faculty members who wish to publish in Open Access books and journals who are required to pay associated fees (APC’s). Approximately $75,000 is available annually and $4,000 maximum is available to an individual author or individual work each academic year. The fund takes applications starting on September 1 and until all funding is depleted.

FROGBEAR Mitacs Globalink Research Awards

The FROGBEAR project has an agreement with Mitacs to fund a limited number of interns under their Globalink Research Award program to support internships between partners in Canada and institutions in East Asia. FROGBEAR can assist in identifying a partner university in Asia where needed. See the FROGBEAR website for details. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis; however, projects must be completed by December 2023.
