Video: Zining Wang Student Alumni Interview with Mason Leung
In this episode of our Student Alumni Interview series, fourth year student Mason Leung (BA’20) interviews alumna Zining Wang (BA ’18), who currently works as a project coordinator for the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Zining knows it can be hard to “see a clear path of how to translate academic passions into a clear objective” and therefore she strongly advocates students to “be open to new experiences, get yourself out there and try different things,” even if it may seem unfamiliar or daunting.

Garchia Yeung, who played the role of the top coordinator for college entrance examinations, was voted as the best actress by the class. Thank you very much to all of the students who put in lots of effort and enjoyed creating the videos!

ASIA 327: K.will and Jay Park Music Video Remake
With the assignment requirements simply being just "make a song or a dance cover", this particular group challenged themselves to reproduce the original frame by frame.
The two singers are neither Korean nor know how to speak it. Furthermore, as many scenes were shot at night, students would commute to campus at 11 pm and shoot into the early hours of the morning! Dr. Saeji and her TAs were blown away by the efforts of this group, unanimously scoring their work as "perfect."

IN MEMORIAM |
|
UBC's Asian Studies' faculty, staff and students were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Alireza Ahmadian. Alireza (second from right) was a passionate supporter of our initiative to establish Persian Language and Iranian Studies within the department, with which he first became acquainted in 2010 as an enthusiastic undergraduate student.
Our Head of Department, Professor Ross King, says: ''Alireza was a devoted and trusted advisor, supporter, confidant and friend. My colleagues in Asian Studies, the Dean’s Office, and the Office of Development and Alumni engagement could never say enough good things about his charisma, his passion, his articulate and insightful analyses of Vancouver’s Iranian community, and above all his warm and generous humanity.''
UBC's Asian Studies Department has renamed its lecture series in Persian and Iranian Studies for the 2019/20 academic year in Alireza's honour.
