Due to recent events and in line with UBC policy, the Asian Studies department is virtually open for business, with all staff and faculty currently working from home during office hours, and classes operating online.
Students registered in our language courses may be interested to note that we have changed the requirements for advancement in our language programs. Any course previously requiring a grade of 60% or higher to be achieved in the pre-requisite course will now require a grade of 55% or higher. Students who have received credit (C) for the course through the C/D/F option will be allowed to continue to the next level in their language studies. This applies to any course taken in 2019W Term 2 (January – April 2020) or year-long courses (September 2019 – April 2020). If you have any questions please contact Asia.Undergrad@ubc.ca
So whilst some of our upcoming events have had to be cancelled or postponed, we soldier on, and look forward to opening our doors on campus again as soon as we're able. In the meantime we will continue to share good news stories and recaps (such as below) via these monthly updates and our Facebook page.

Chinese Poetry Night
Love! Sadness! Passion! Poetry recitals, choreography and displays of original art pieces were just some of the few things you could have experienced at the UBC Asian Centre on the evening of February 27th.
UBC is a cultural mosaic with the faculty of Asian Studies being one of the biggest homes of diversity. Along with this cultural diversity comes different talents, traditions and art that cannot go unshared. The Lantern Festival Poetry Night does so by sharing fine art from different regions of Asia as a way of exchanging cultural differences and similarities. We hope everyone enjoyed this year’s poetry night! If you missed it, don’t worry, this annual event will come back next year for you to experience a slice of Asian heritage. We hope to see you there!

2020 Careers Night
Recently our annual Careers Night was held at Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre. Joined by 11 Asian Studies alumni coming from diverse career backgrounds, students had the opportunity to make connections with others who share similar interests, and seek career advice. With the major highlight being the “round robin” speed networking session, Careers Night provided opportunities for students to mingle and connect with alumni who have been through the same degree, and are now well into their career paths. We would like to thank all guests, staff and volunteers, whose joint efforts made the event a great success again.
