Leadership change within the
Vice-President, Finance & Operations portfolio (VPFO)

Peter Smailes, Vice-President, Finance and Operations, is leaving UBC to take up a new opportunity at Kwantlen Polytechnic University as their Vice-President, Administration.

During his time at UBC, Peter has guided the university through capital financing and borrowing, cash management, tax, faculty housing assistance, revenue accounting, business contracts and leases, the relationship with UBC Investment Management Trust and UBC Properties Trust. He also took on the role of Executive Lead for the Integrated Renewal Program, and has provided steady and valued leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peter will be leaving his role at the end of May, at which point Karamjeet Heer will act as interim Vice-President, Finance, and John Metras will act as interim Vice-President, Operations. UBC is very fortunate to have two exceptional individuals to take on these roles, to ensure leadership continuity and to support the transition as we launch the search for a new Vice-President, Finance and Operations.

Emergency tip: Know the risks

Knowing the potential disasters and hazards that exist in your area are an important part of emergency preparedness, and will help you properly prepare. Earthquakes and wildfires are the first that come to mind, but many others can affect us.

For a complete list if the natural risks and other hazards in BC, visit UBC's Emergency Prepareness website, or Government of Canada’s Get Prepared website.

Workplace Strategies for Mental Health: The function of emotions

We can learn important information from studying exactly what an emotional response may be telling us. For example, we may be surprised to find ourselves reacting angrily when invited to a special event. When we think about it more, we may realize that we are angry because we feel over extended.

Our anger is telling us to change something in our work-life balance, at least temporarily. It may feel like an injustice to add just one more event, but we know that the injustice is actually the unreasonable demands we place on ourself. This will allow us to respond to the invitation much more graciously that we might have otherwise. It will also allow us to take the wisdom of the anger and use it to make healthy changes in our work-life balance.

Learn more about the value in our emotions and how they can help us learn and grow.
