UBC’s New Cogen Engine arrives on April 6
UBC’s replacement cogeneration engine is now on its way to the Vancouver campus.
The Jenbacher J-612 engine-and-generator package replaces the original J-620 package. The new J-612 is arriving on Thursday, April 6, 2023. This beast-of-an-engine will be crane-lifted off the delivery truck and gently rolled into its home inside the Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF) engine room.
“These Jenbacher engines have a 60,000-hour life span (10 years) and then they need to be sent to Austria for a rebuild,” explained Jason Rako, the BRDF’s Chief Engineer. “The J-612 is a bit smaller than the J-620 but will provide the same electrical power output. I also expect it to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.”
Refer to the document for more information, including the detailed lifting plan and checklist of requirements.
Cogeneration is an industrial process where waste heat from an engine, usually lost to the environment, is captured and used – greatly improving energy efficiency. The cogeneration module at the BRDF produces electricity and heat for the UBC Vancouver campus.
