New Publication on Transnational Sex Workers in Yokohama by Dr. Ayaka Yoshimizu
Congratulations to Professor Ayaka Yoshimizu's on her new publication Doing Ethnography in the Wake of the Displacement of Transnational Sex Workers in Yokohama! This book reflects on the politics, poetics, and ethics of remembering the lives of transnational migrant sex workers in postcolonial Japan.

Learn about UBC's Hindi-Urdu Language Program
The Hindi-Urdu language program is unique in the Department of Asian Studies. Although Hindi and Urdu are essentially the same language written in two different scripts, their vocabulary differs due to relationships with their respective religious, traditions and cosmopolitan languages.

Fostering Education beyond the Classroom: Examples from Republican Buddhism and their Legacy Today

What Would an Accessible University Look Like? Perspectives of Disabled Instructors at UBC

This workshop is the culmination of a project focused on disabilities, ableism, and accessibility for disabled instructors at UBC, including faculty, sessionals, and graduate student TAs. Featuring three Asian Studies faculty members and a graduate student, the event will present outcomes of the project and offers a forum and networking opportunity for disabled instructors.

The annual Yip So Man Wat Memorial Lecture will continue this winter with Professor Ban Wang from Stanford University. Focusing on national formation and international outlooks, Dr. Wang will discuss how ancient visions persist even as Chinese modernizers and revolutionaries adopted and revised the Western nation-state form.

A Panel to Their Heart: Promoting Mental Wellness among Heritage Mandarin Learners
This past October, the UBC Chinese Language Program hosted a panel for heritage Mandarin learners and their family members in acknowledgement of these learners’ unique mental health challenges. The panel featured three panelists, welcomed about 50 attendees and offered an abundance of tailored information and resources for heritage Mandarin learners’ mental wellbeing.

Open for Application - Visiting Fellowship Programme 2022 - Institute of Chinese Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong
In 2022, ICS will launch a Visiting Fellowship Programme for scholars in Chinese Studies to visit and conduct research at CUHK for a period of 3-6 months. While in residence, the Visiting Fellow is expected to interact with colleagues at CUHK, conduct and present his/her research, and work on a publication project. Deadline for application is January 1, 2022.

CUHK - Call for Paper Proposals: Young Scholars’ Forum in Chinese Studies 2022
The Institute of Chinese Studies organizes an annual Young Scholars' Forum in Chinese Studies to nurture and and strengthen the network between young scholars in the field. The forum plans to invite Ph.D. students and Ph.D. graduates for a presentation of their recent research output on any aspect of Chinese studies. The online application deadline is January 3, 2022.

Global Seminars for Asian Studies (Summer 2022)
Get an international experience in the summer. Global Seminars are prof-led UBC courses that take place in different locations, and focus on a specific topic. Want to earn UBC credits while travelling through Hong Kong, Kaiping, and Malaysia? Go Global will be offering ACAM 390A: The Heritage of Chinese Migrations.
