Welcome Frank Laezza!

This week marks the official start of Frank's tenure with UBC as our new Vice-President Finance & Operations. As a strong believer in connected leadership, Frank is looking forward to working with our VPFO team of over 1400 folks in the oversight of UBC's physical and financial and financial assets, and the general safety of our campus communities.

Over the next month Frank will be meeting with the team and learning about how we work through a variety of cross-functional events — please take advantage of these opportunities to meet Frank and to connect with each other as the details become available!

Read Frank's bio on the VPFO website, or catch up on some information he shared about himself last week.

Keeping our campus warm

It’s not easy keeping a campus as large as UBC (over 400 hectares in size!) warm throughout the cooler months. Most buildings on the UBC Vancouver campus are connected to a centralized thermal energy system managed by UBC Facilities’ Energy & Water Services which oversees thermal energy generation and conservation.

Energy & Water Services’ Thermal Power Engineers within the Thermal Utilities unit play a key role in maintaining continuous operational and system vigilance and ensuring that the campus receives reliable thermal energy.

The 12 Thermal Power Engineers work on rotating 12-hour shifts to ensure continuous year-round thermal plant coverage — even on campus throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As work carries on at the CEC and BRDF, kudos to our thermal operators for continuing to demonstrate adaptability, expertise and collaboration: Adit Rachmat, Colton Janssen, Erik Fischer, Ethan Chan, Jagpreet Randhawa, Michael Geary, Parm Gill, Satinder Saini, Sukhwinder Mahey, Talwinder Sekhon, Xiao Evan Qiu, Zulfiqar Ali, Jason Rako, and Clayton Mullen.

Pets & animals in the workplace

UBC recognizes the important role that animals/pets play in the lives of many faculty, staff and students. Bringing an animal/pet to work is a privilege and a responsibility. In order to protect the health and safety of faculty, staff and students, certain rules and etiquette must be applied when an animal/pet is brought into a UBC Vancouver campus building. For UBC buildings located off campus, contact Safety & Risk Services (604-822-2029) for guidance.

The attached document provides more information, including an agreement to be completed to ensure visitors are informed of the presence of the animal and the safe evacuation of the animal during an emergency.

If you are dispatched to work in an area where you find a pet unattended, and are uncomfortable about entering the space, please contact your supervisor and they will work with your Facilities Manager to schedule an alternate time to perform that work.

Weekly Emergency Tip: How much water should I have for an emergency?

Plan to have at least four litres of water per person per day for drinking, personal hygiene, preparing food and dishwashing. A family of four should store 48 litres of water for a 3 day period. Don’t forget to have some extra water for your pets.

For more information about water storage and treatment, visit Government of Canada’s website.
