Asian Studies Graduate Conference

UBC Asian Library Closed for Space Improvements, January 2 to 28
The branch closed to the public starting January 2, 2024, and is expected to fully reopen on January 29, 2023, at regular branch hours. Collections service, on-site reference service, and on-site instruction will be available intermittently during the closure, by appointment.

WE ARE HUMAN!: Documentary Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Join UBC Asian Library and the Department of Asian Studies for a film screening and panel discussion of Watashitachi wa Ningen da! (We are Human!). This award-winning film interrogates Japan's immigration policies and can cast reflections on British Columbia’s relationship with its migrant foreign workers. Participants are requested to view the film beforehand. UBC faculty, staff and students can access the film through the library's collections.

The UBC Cantonese Language Program Meet and Greet with Hong Kong Band, The Hertz
On the evening of October 15, 2023, the Asian Centre Auditorium buzzed with excitement as the popular Hong Kong band, The Hertz, visited UBC Campus to share their personal stories and inspiration behind their musical work and videos. Celebrating cultural exchange and musical diversity, the visit brought a taste of Hong Kong’s vibrant Cantopop music scene to UBC, leaving a mark on everyone who attended.

Apply for 2024 Summer Courses in Chinese Literature at National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan)
National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2024 courses in Chinese Literature. They offer an exceptional range of courses in classical Chinese literature, contemporary Chinese literature, art, history, and cultural studies. A key focus of this program is on helping high-level students of Mandarin develop their language skills. The deadline to apply is January 31 by 7:00am (PT) .
Call for Submissions: Comparative Literature Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Comparative Literature Undergraduate Research Symposium‘s 11th Annual Symposium, “Re-presenting Spaces: Literature, Ecology, the World We Share,” will be held on April 27th, 2024, at the University of California, Berkeley. They are currently accepting abstracts on all subjects within the broad category of “comparative literature,” and seeking submission from undergraduates and recent graduates who are NOT currently attending graduate school. The deadline for submissions is February 7.
Call for Papers: Annual UBC Asian Studies Graduate Conference
The Annual UBC Asian Studies Graduate Conference will take place on March 3 on the theme of Encountering the Past and Paving Futures in Studying and Reading Asia. This opportunity is open to graduate students from any discipline related to Asian Studies who are interested. For those who wish to participate, please fill in the form through the link with your information and a 250-300 word abstract by February 11.
Duke University’s Critical Asian Humanities Accepting Master's Program Applications
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University is accepting applications for their MA Program in Critical Asian Humanities. Combining the strengths of critical theory and area studies, the curriculum places an emphasis on visual culture, gender studies, migration studies, and empire studies from both the modern and contemporary periods. For more information about the program and how to apply, please visit their website. Applications for fall admission are due February 15.
Call for Papers: ASPAC 2024 Conference
The Organizing Committee of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) 2024 at University of Hawaii at Hilo invites scholars with an interest in Asian or Asian diaspora studies to submit proposals for the upcoming ASPAC Conference. Proposals connecting theory, method, or practice to contemporary or historical questions of urbanization, migration, exchange and sustainability within, across, or alongside Asia are especially welcome. Submission deadline is on February 28.
