Hong Kong Studies Initiative (HKSI)

April 7, 2020

Hosted by the Department of Asian Studies, the Hong Kong Studies Initiative (HKSI) at the University of British Columbia is devoted to promoting the teaching and research of this most-improbable metropolis, both as an extraordinary Chinese city and as a spectacular international and transnational hub.

Dear Friends of HKSI,

What a month it has been! I hope you and your family are staying safe and keeping well. There is no higher priority than that.

As UBC has transitioned to online learning and remote meetings, the Hong Kong Studies Initiative has also suspended all its physical gatherings until further notice. We are of course disappointed by this turn of events, as we were very much looking forward to coming together to celebrate the completion of another successful academic year.

It is unclear when “normalcy” will return. But after taking a hiatus in April we do intend to plow ahead with some (online) events comes May. We know Hong Kong studies is alive and strong. And we will be back—in full force—when the time comes.

Sincerely,

Leo K. Shin 單國鉞
Associate Professor, History and Asian Studies
Convenor, Hong Kong Studies Initiative 共研香江

SPOTLIGHT: CANTONESE MUSIC

Although we are unable to come together in person to celebrate the end of another successful teaching term for Hong Kong studies at UBC, we are pleased to learn from HKSI Associate Dr. Hedy Law that her latest offering, “Cantonese Music” (MUSC 327/ASIA 335), has gone off to an excellent start. To find out why Dr. Law, a scholar of eighteenth-century French opera and pantomime, has decided to take on this adventure, check out this profile and interview by the School of Music.

Here is a playlist of Cantonese music complied by Dr. Hedy Law.

For UBC students who are in need of some diversion and who would like to try their hands on writing lyrics, please check out the Cantonese Lyrics Competition: Combating Covid-19 《抗疫時代》粵語填詞比賽 (deadline: 30 April 2020) co-sponsored by the School of Music and the Department of Asian Studies.
