Dr. Sharalyn Orbaugh receives Foreign Minister of Japan’s Commendation
On June 26, 2025, a ceremony was held to formally present the Foreign Minister of Japan’s Commendation to Professor Sharalyn Orbaugh, Head of the Department of Asian Studies.
Professor Orbaugh has dedicated nearly four decades to the study of modern Japanese literature and popular culture. She was awarded this honour in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the promotion of Japanese studies in Canada.

Drs. Christopher Rea and Bruce Rusk edit China's earliest collection of swindle stories
Congratulations to Asian Studies professors Christopher Rea and Bruce Rusk who recently published their edited and annotated version of the Ming-dynasty "Book of Swindles" (Du pian xin shu), with contributions from UBC Asian Studies PhD student Chien-Cho Chan and PhD graduate Yinzong Wei.
The book includes 84 true-crime stories about crooks and scammers throughout the empire, along with explanations of key historical contexts and cultural allusions from Drs. Rea and Rusk.

9th Annual Hasekura International Symposium held at UBC
The 9th Annual Hasekura International Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the Asian Centre June 24 and 25, on the theme "Possession/Dispossession: Embodiment, Exorcism, Ownership, and Loss."
The Hasekura League is a network of mostly European universities and Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. UBC is one of only two North American members, and June's event was the first Hasekura symposium in Canada.
The event was supported by Tohoku's Center for Integrated Japanese Studies and International Graduate Program in Japanese Studies, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhism and Contemporary Society, and the Department of Asian Studies UBC.

Experiencing Kōdō: A Weekend of Japanese Incense Culture at UBC
This spring, UBC Library was honoured to co-present a weekend of public incense gatherings and lectures on the Japanese incense tradition.
Thoughtfully organized by the Dōjin Japanese Arts Society, the program allowed participants to experience incense culture through an array of activities centered around a keynote lecture and symposium on Friday, May 23, and public incense gatherings on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25.

Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to learn, meet new people, and foster diversity in Vancouver's arts and culture community. Apply as soon as possible.
Apply for the 2025 Partnership Recognition and Exploration Fund
The Partnership Recognition and Exploration (PRE) Fund awards up to $1,500 to fill small resource gaps so community partners can build reciprocal relationships with UBC students, faculty and staff. Funding is available until December 31, or until all funds are exhausted. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and typically assessed within one week of submission.
