Welcome to UBC Science

Congratulations on being admitted to the UBC Faculty of Science! We cannot wait to be a part of your learning and see the impact you will make during your time at UBC.

We know your final year of high school has not been what you expected and that you may be feeling unsure of what your first year of university will be like. We're writing today to share a few more details about what you can expect when you join UBC Science this fall.

UBC has announced that our first term (September – December) will be mostly online. This means that you don't have to be in Canada, British Columbia, or even Vancouver to start your degree with UBC Science. You'll still be able to take a full suite of courses with our online offerings, including many labs, so that you can progress into second year. For the labs that can't be offered at a distance, you'll be able to take those lab courses when we return to our beautiful Point Grey campus.

UBC Science is a North American leader in transforming science education. We've been driving research and improvements in STEM education for years and the continued implementation of our courses online is no exception. We're deep in our planning for fall and are making plans for when you officially start your studies with us. Our instructors are world-renowned for their teaching ability and use active learning techniques that will support you to learn effectively, including in an online environment. We're designing ways for you to engage in your classes no matter which time zone you live in, and we're working with a network of fellow Science students to welcome you to UBC and help you connect with our community, including to introduce you to your new university friends.

Conversations about this fall are ongoing and we'll stay in contact with you in the coming weeks and throughout the summer to provide more information, including to provide details on important milestones in your experience like registering for courses! Keep an eye on your inbox and please add advising@mailout.science.ubc.ca to your email contact list so you don't miss important information, dates and deadlines. In the meantime, if you have an urgent question, you can find Science Advising via one of our real-time options science.ubc.ca/students/advising and we will do our best to help you.

We'll stay in contact with you throughout the summer, including later this month when we send you more information about how to prepare for course registration.

Best wishes as you wrap up your high school studies. We hope that you and those you love continue to be safe and healthy.

Scientifically yours,
the team at UBC Science: Dean Meigan Aronson, Associate Dean Students Ian Cavers, Associate Dean Academic Sara Harris, the staff at Science Advising & Student Engagement, and the rest of your home Faculty.
