Research Seminar Series: Standing Up to Our Fear - Understanding the links between emotion, balance and falls.
February 7, 2024 at 12:00 - 1:00pm
Emotions such as fear and anxiety have been strongly linked to balance instability, dizziness and falls. While traditionally, fear and anxiety were only considered to be the negative outcomes of a prior fall, more recent evidence suggests these factors can directly influence balance performance and future fall risk. In this presentation, we will discuss new evidence supporting emotion-balance interactions and the implications for the assessment, prevention and treatment of balance deficits and falls.

The orientation meeting will be on zoom on January 30th at 5pm with pairs meeting monthly at their convenience during February, March and April.

Living Histories
January 24, February 14, March 13, April 10 from 10:00- 11:00am
Are you fascinated by life stories? Where we all came from, who we are and what is meaningful? Each person has their own story of struggle, challenge, success and growth. The past is part of who you are today and you are living that history every day.

Come, share, connect as we listen to each others stories and then keep those stories alive by practicing the invaluable sharing of your story with other participants and the next generation. Participants from the fall term are welcome back as well as new participants!

Community Crafting
Socializing while creating….all good for your wellbeing!

More and more community centres and yarn stores are hosting social crafting events, also known as “By Hand” gatherings or “Sit and Stitch” meet ups. If you are looking for company while you create or someone who can share their knowledge or their stash of supplies, reach out to your local community centre or yarn store to see if there is an ongoing event in your neighborhood.

The BCBWP Crafters for a Cause just delivered a trunkful of handmade items to the VGH Tertiary Mental Health and Substance Abuse inpatient units with items of winter warmth, seasonal décor and inspirational messages. Our next project starts on January 29th and will be in collaboration with Immigrant Services Society of BC. Register below or contact Elaine Book for more information.

Creative Collective: Featured Creator of the Month - Jan Jeannene

Jeannene Christie has pursued two careers: she was a registered massage therapist and also worked with people with disabilities, especially those with autism. She was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and her symptoms worsened with age. An art therapist introduced her to the therapeutic aspect of art, which provided hope and helped her dispel the dark cloud of depression.
