Photos + Video: The 2019 Harjit Kaur Sidhu Memorial Program This year, UBC Asian Studies hosted the eleventh annual Harjit Kaur Sidhu Memorial Program on March 14th. The Harjit Kaur Sidhu Memorial Program celebrates the rich life of Punjabi language and culture and its importance in BC, in memory of a woman who shared such passions. Our goal is to call attention to important new scholarship on Punjabi language and culture and bring it to our students and the broader Vancouver area audience; encourage and recognize achievements in Punjabi language cultural production in BC; and honor students for their work in learning and using the Punjabi language. The 2019 Taiwan Scholarship Program The Taiwan Scholarship Program was established by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree programs in Taiwan.The deadline for applications (undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs) is on March 31, 2019. The 2019 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Program The MOE 2019 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship was created to encourage international students to study Huayu courses in the Republic of China (Taiwan) and provide them with opportunities to increase their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society, and to promote mutual understanding and interactions between Taiwan and the international community. The Asian Pacific Foundation of Canada Launches 2019-20 Media Fellowship Program The APF Canada Media Fellowship Program, supported in part by Cathay Pacific Airways, offers two up-and-coming and established journalists the opportunity to spend time in Asia researching and preparing stories for Canadian audiences. The goal of the program is to help Canadian journalists become better informed about this dynamic part of the world in order to write and broadcast insightfully on Asia and the Canada-Asia relationship. The UBC Himalaya Program will be offering two-week intensive Nepali and Tibetan language and community-engaged learning courses in summer 2019 in collaboration with the Department of Asian Studies. These courses blend classroom instruction with experiential learning off-campus at Himalayan community sites in the Lower Mainland. This year, Nepali and Tibetan will be offered between April 29 - May 10, 2019. Synergy: The Journal of Contemporary Asian Studies - Call for Submissions The Asian Institute of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, University of Toronto is currently inviting submissions for their online publication. Their journal seeks to publish the world's premier undergraduate work pertaining to the study of contemporary Asia, specifically on the current political, historical, social, and/or economic developments in the Asia region. Synergy is currently listed with the Library and Archives Canada. Submissions are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. UBC Offers New Classical Arabic Courses this Summer Classical Arabic, ARBC 101 and ARBC 102 offers special rewards to the dedicated student, with its unusually rich vocabulary, architectural grammar and treasury of literature from history, philosophy and the natural sciences to poetry, belles letters’, mysticism and, especially, scripture or Qur’an. The UBC program will teach students first to read, write and pronounce Arabic script, and then to read and comprehend passages from classical Arabic texts, analyzing their grammatical and stylistic features. |

Could you explain to a non-expert what you are researching and why it is significant? I am examining the contribution of women in the field of Punjabi theatre, focusing on four women who are seen as pillars in the area, and looking at the intersectionality of shame, honour, caste and class. In particular, I am examining the absence of women from the early days of Punjabi theatre and exploring why the aforementioned four women achieved accolades in this area when it had been restricted from women for so long. I argue that a primary reason for restriction of women from the public performative space is the connection of shame with non normative female roles, and that this experience of shame and the possibility of subverting it are constrained by class and caste distinctions. Why did you choose the Asian Studies program at UBC? I completed both my BA and MA from the Asian Studies program at UBC and was therefore familiar with the department’s strengths. In addition, I had met Dr. Anne Murphy previously and felt that her knowledge of the Punjab and Punjabi language, as well as her interest in Punjabi literature deemed her to be the best supervisor for my interests. What are your career and academic goals? And how is our program helping you achieve them? I have worked as a part time instructor of Punjabi language at Kwantlen Polytechnic University since 2005. Although I greatly enjoy teaching language, I was eager to delve further into the world of academia with my students, particularly in the areas of literature, gender and performance. My status as a PhD candidate has allowed me to now also join and teach in the Department of Asian Studies at KPU, as well as develop and teach further courses in folklore, Punjabi culture and performance in my current department of Language and Cultures. I am also interested in creating an archive of interviews of females in the world of Punjabi theatre, as currently, there is scant information available on these females available in the Punjabi language and even less in English. What has been your most impactful experience as a graduate student? Without a doubt, the opportunity to travel to the Punjab and conduct field research. I was able to interview the aforementioned four female actresses/directors. The opportunity to record them and hear them tell their stories about their life and experiences was something that I will never forget. Can you give any advice to new students in our program or for students considering applying to it? The most important piece of advice I can offer is do not work alone. Try to meet and interact with as many individuals as possible on a daily basis, and if that is not possible then on a weekly or monthly basis (at the very least). The support, both emotional and academic, that you can receive from other students is invaluable. |
