Passing, Posing, Persuasion—co-edited by our Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Literature, Dr. Christina Yi—uncovers the intersections between cultural production, identity, and persuasive messages on idealized unity across Japan’s East Asian empire (1895-1945). This book highlights the nature of Japan’s East Asian empire and finds the contradictions and tensions in their ideologies of race, nation, and ethnicity.

An Evening of K-Pop Dancing, Games, Food, and Fun: Third Annual K-Pop Dance Event
The third annual K-Pop Dance Event held by our Korean Language and Culture Program was a success! With 60 attendees and collaboration from Korean Consul Chanwook Kim and K-Pop cover dance group Zonic, attendees had a fun night learning new dances, striking the stage, and aiming for prizes.

Crafting New Chapters: The Creative Fusion of DIY eBooks in CLP Lecturer's Summer Program
Ms. Mingzhu Lu, Lecturer in Chinese Language, brought innovation to the Chinese Language Program this past summer by introducing the Book Creator software to elevate the language learning experience. This initiative infused creativity and storytelling through the transformation of written class content into visually engaging eBooks.

ASIA 366B - Gender & Sexuality in Classical Persian Literature
This course examines how gender and sexuality are constructed and contested in some major works of Persian Literature from the 11th to the 17th century, such as the Shāhnāmeh, Layli and Majnun, and the Conference of the Birds, as well as other lesser-known texts. This course will be held in person in Winter Term 2, with no prerequisites.
TIBT 100 - Introduction to Tibetan I
This course introduces concepts, grammar, syntax of spoken and written Tibetan for beginners. Also, expect to learn more about aspects of the Tibetan worldview. This course will be held in person in Winter Term 2, with no prerequisites.

|
UBC Asian Library closed for space improvements from January 2 to 28
UBC Asian Library is undergoing space improvements to replace the carpeting on the main floor and install new public furniture. The branch will be closed to the public starting January 2, 2024, and is expected to fully reopen on January 29, 2023, at regular branch hours.
Areas within the branch will be inaccessible during construction. Collections service, on-site reference service, and on-site instruction will be available intermittently during the closure, by appointment.

Call for Applications: Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Fund
The Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (ISI) Fund supports projects that advance UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan priority actions across both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. ISI funding is allocated across three streams: Streams 1 and 2 are for staff, faculty and post-doc-led projects; Stream 3 is for student-led projects. There will be five information sessions, open to all, from October through December, as well as a support session for students interested in applying to Stream 3. Find out more, register for information sessions, and apply online. Applications are due January 12, 2024.
Apply for 2024 Summer Courses in Chinese Literature at National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan)
National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2024 courses in Chinese Literature. They offer an exceptional range of courses in classical Chinese literature, contemporary Chinese literature, art, history, and cultural studies. A key focus of this program is on helping high-level students of Mandarin develop their language skills. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2024 by 7:00am (PT).
Call for Submissions: Comparative Literature Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Comparative Literature Undergraduate Research Symposium‘s 11th Annual Symposium, “Re-presenting Spaces: Literature, Ecology, the World We Share,” will be held on April 27th, 2024, at the University of California, Berkeley. They are currently accepting abstracts on all subjects within the broad category of “comparative literature,” and seeking submission from undergraduates and recent graduates who are NOT currently attending graduate school. The deadline for submissions is February 7, 2024.
Duke University’s Critical Asian Humanities Accepting Master's Program Applications
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University is accepting applications for their MA Program in Critical Asian Humanities. Combining the strengths of critical theory and area studies, the curriculum places an emphasis on visual culture, gender studies, migration studies, and empire studies from both the modern and contemporary periods. For more information about the program and how to apply, please visit their website. Applications for fall admission are due February 15, 2024.
